The Suez Canal opened to navigation, creating a direct saltwater corridor between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. This new pathway made it possible for marine organisms to move between two ecosystems that had been separated for a very long time. The ecological mixing that followed later became known as Lessepsian migration (mostly Red Sea species entering the Mediterranean).
The canal route included the Bitter Lakes, which were naturally very salty (hypersaline). In the canal’s early decades, this hypersaline section acted like a difficult “filter,” limiting which organisms could survive the crossing. Over time, seawater exchange reduced the strength of this barrier, making successful migration easier.
An international agreement (the Constantinople Convention) reinforced the principle that the canal should remain open to ships of all nations in peace and war. While this was mainly about trade and military access, it also mattered ecologically: frequent and continuous shipping supports ongoing water movement, habitat disturbance, and repeated introductions of organisms. In practice, canal operations and politics would still affect how “open” the pathway was at different times.
By the late 1800s, scientists had begun documenting Red Sea organisms establishing in the Mediterranean near the canal’s northern entrance. One example often cited is the blue swimming crab Portunus segnis, recorded in the Mediterranean in 1898 near Port Said. These early records provided concrete evidence that the canal was enabling biological invasions.
Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal, ending control by the previous concessionary company and triggering major international tension soon afterward. Although this event was political, it shaped management, dredging priorities, and military risks around the canal. Those human decisions later influenced how easily species could pass through the corridor.
After the start of the 1967 war, Egypt closed the Suez Canal, and it remained closed for years. This interruption reduced regular through-flow and traffic-related disturbances that can help transport organisms. The closure shows that Lessepsian migration is not only biological—it is also shaped by war and canal operations.
Egypt completed the Aswan High Dam, greatly changing the Nile River’s flow and the delivery of sediments and nutrients to the sea. Researchers frequently link this shift to ecological change along the Egyptian coast and the Levant, including conditions that can favor warm-water, Red Sea–origin species. In other words, the canal provided the pathway, and regional environmental changes helped some newcomers succeed.
The canal reopened to international navigation, restoring continuous water exchange and heavy ship traffic. This reopening re-established the canal as a constant ecological corridor between seas. Over time, the eastern Mediterranean continued to accumulate more Red Sea species than the reverse direction.
Marine ecologist Francis Dov Por published a synthesis that helped define and popularize the idea of “Lessepsian migration” as a large-scale movement of Red Sea biota into the Mediterranean through the canal. Naming the process mattered because it organized scattered observations into a single research topic. From this point, monitoring and reporting of “Lessepsian migrants” expanded across many marine groups.
Over decades, engineering works made the canal deeper and wider to carry larger and more ships. These changes can also make the canal more permeable to organisms by changing currents, habitats (like rocky edges), and the amount of water exchanged. Ecologically, the canal became a more effective pathway, not just a shipping route.
Egypt inaugurated a major canal expansion, adding new waterways and increasing two-way traffic capacity in parts of the route. This increased the scale and speed of water movement and human activity along the canal corridor. Scientists and managers increasingly discussed how infrastructure upgrades could interact with climate warming to accelerate biological invasions.
As the eastern Mediterranean has warmed, conditions have become more suitable for many warm-water species arriving through the canal. Research in marine science journals links warming with the broader spread of tropical invaders, including Lessepsian fish, though the exact patterns differ by species. This makes Lessepsian migration not just a “canal effect,” but a long-term climate-and-infrastructure story.
Recent records continue to document Lessepsian species appearing farther west than earlier decades, including new occurrences in the central Mediterranean. For example, studies in 2024–2025 reported new records of the bigfin reef squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) in areas such as Italy (Lampedusa) and Malta, building on earlier eastern Mediterranean observations. This continuing spread highlights the present-day outcome: a lasting reorganization of Mediterranean biodiversity driven by a man-made corridor plus changing ocean conditions.
