During the Mahdist War, Britain built a military railway from Wadi Halfa toward Abu Hamed to speed troop and supply movement into Sudan. Though created for war, it became a foundation for later rail development in the Nile corridor—an essential northern approach in the Cape-to-Cairo concept.
British authorities began building the Uganda Railway from the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa toward Lake Victoria. This line was central to later "Cape-to-Cairo" corridor thinking because it aimed to secure and supply British influence in East Africa using rail transport.
Rail construction pushing north from southern Africa reached Bulawayo, strengthening a rail backbone that Cape-to-Cairo advocates hoped would continue toward central Africa. Reaching Bulawayo also reinforced the idea that long-distance rail advance across political frontiers was possible with sustained investment.
A French expedition led by Jean-Baptiste Marchand reached Fashoda (now Kodok, South Sudan) and raised the French flag. The move was tied to a French west–east imperial corridor concept that would intersect Britain’s north–south ambitions, including a Cape-to-Cairo railway route.
British-Egyptian forces under Horatio Kitchener arrived at Fashoda, bringing the Anglo-French rivalry to a dangerous high point. The crisis mattered for railway planning because it highlighted that corridor projects depended on political control of key geographic junctions, not just engineering.
Britain and France agreed that the Nile–Congo watershed would mark the boundary between their spheres of influence in this region. By reducing the immediate risk of Anglo-French conflict over the Upper Nile, the agreement made future surveys and railway planning in northeast/central Africa less likely to trigger a crisis.
War broke out between Britain and the two Boer republics in southern Africa. The conflict absorbed money, manpower, and attention that otherwise could have supported rapid northward railway extension, showing how politics and warfare could stall the Cape-to-Cairo corridor.
The Uganda Railway was completed to Port Florence (now Kisumu) on Lake Victoria. This created a major transport link from the coast into the interior, enabling further lake-and-rail connections that Cape-to-Cairo supporters hoped could eventually tie into routes north toward Sudan and Egypt.
Cecil Rhodes died in the Cape Colony, removing a central political and financial champion of the Cape-to-Cairo railway dream. After his death, the idea continued, but it faced greater difficulty turning ambition into coordinated construction and cross-border agreements.
The Treaty of Vereeniging ended the Second Boer War. The end of fighting allowed railways in southern Africa to shift from wartime vulnerability and disruption back toward commercial expansion and longer-term corridor visions.
Portugal granted a long-term concession for the Benguela Railway, aimed at connecting the Atlantic port of Lobito into Angola’s interior and toward mineral regions farther east. Although not a British project, it shaped the wider reality of competing rail corridors in south-central Africa, affecting what a Cape-to-Cairo route could realistically connect to.
Work began on the Benguela Railway. Its progress illustrated how multiple empires pursued rail access to inland resources, creating overlapping—and sometimes competing—priorities that complicated a single continuous Cape-to-Cairo line.
Britain and France signed the Entente Cordiale, easing colonial disputes and improving relations. This diplomatic shift mattered for African corridor planning because it lowered the chance that Anglo-French rivalry (as seen at Fashoda) would derail surveys and negotiations needed for long-distance rail schemes.
The Victoria Falls Bridge over the Zambezi River was completed, carrying rail traffic and physically connecting rail systems on both sides of the river. It became one of the most concrete steps toward a north–south rail corridor because it removed a major natural barrier on the route toward central Africa.
The outbreak of World War I shifted imperial budgets and labor toward the war effort and away from major new African rail projects. By 1914, surveys and partial construction existed in several regions, but the vision of a continuous Cape-to-Cairo corridor remained unfinished, with wartime priorities closing this chapter of prewar planning.
