The Russian government issued an imperial rescript announcing its intention to build a railway across Siberia. This decision set the political and financial framework for what became the Trans-Siberian Railway, aiming to link European Russia with the Pacific coast.
Tsarevich Nicholas (later Nicholas II) formally inaugurated construction in Vladivostok, marking a high-profile public start for the project. The ceremony signaled that the line was intended as a national strategic corridor, not only a regional railway.
Work on the West Siberian Railway pushed the mainline east from Chelyabinsk through Kurgan and Omsk toward the Ob River. These early sections created the first long, continuous stretches of track that could support regular construction supply and settlement expansion.
A rail link from Vladivostok to Ussuriysk opened, expanding track in the Russian Far East while western sections were still under construction. This helped establish an eastern railhead and supported the longer-term goal of a continuous Moscow–Vladivostok route.
An agreement associated with the Russian-Chinese Bank and Qing representatives granted rights to build and operate a railway through Manchuria. This created the Chinese Eastern Railway (CER), a route that would later provide a faster connection for through traffic while Russia’s all-domestic Amur route was still incomplete.
The rail bridge across the Ob River opened, solving a major engineering and routing barrier on the West/Middle Siberian route. The crossing helped anchor a new rail hub area that grew into Novosibirsk, strengthening the line’s central logistics corridor.
Construction began on the Circum-Baikal Railway, the difficult section carved along Lake Baikal’s rocky southern shore. It required extensive civil engineering (including tunnels and retaining structures) and was intended to replace reliance on ferry crossings.
Before rails fully encircled Lake Baikal, an icebreaking train ferry was used to connect the western and eastern railheads. This stopgap kept traffic moving across a major natural obstacle while engineers prepared a more permanent shoreline railway.
The Russo-Japanese War tested the Trans-Siberian Railway’s ability to move troops and supplies over long distances. The strain underscored practical problems of a long, largely single-track line and increased pressure to strengthen bottlenecks and improve strategic reliability.
With the Circum-Baikal section put into operation, rail traffic could move around Lake Baikal instead of transferring trains by ferry. This was a key step toward a more reliable all-rail corridor, reducing seasonal disruption from ice and weather on the lake.
After concerns about depending on routes outside Russian territory, the government moved to build the Amur Railway as the last major section fully within Russia. The decree formalized state-funded construction across sparsely populated areas with harsh climate and permafrost conditions.
The Khabarovsk railway bridge over the Amur River was finished and inaugurated, enabling year-round rail crossing without ferries or seasonal ice routes. With this final major obstacle removed, the Moscow–Vladivostok corridor could operate as a continuous rail line entirely on Russian territory, marking the end of the core 1891–1916 construction era.
