New York City approved a major construction-and-lease deal (known as Contract 1) to build the first underground rapid-transit route and lease it for operation to a private company backed by August Belmont Jr. This set the basic early model: the city built core infrastructure while a private operator ran trains and maintained service under contract.
City officials held a public groundbreaking at City Hall, marking the start of large-scale subway construction. Building under crowded streets required new approaches to excavation, utility relocation, and keeping traffic moving aboveground.
The first regularly operated segment of the New York City Subway opened, running from City Hall to 145th Street in Manhattan. It introduced a key service pattern—local and express tracks—that helped move large numbers of riders quickly through the city’s busiest corridor.
New York City signed the Dual Contracts with two private operators—the IRT and the BRT (later BMT)—to build and upgrade many lines and then operate them under long leases. These agreements drove much of the system’s early 20th-century growth, extending rapid transit deeper into the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.
The BRT opened service into Manhattan via the Centre Street subway to Chambers Street, an early step toward a fuller Nassau Street loop in Lower Manhattan. This helped tie Brooklyn lines more directly into Manhattan’s business districts and foreshadowed later, more complete connections.
The IRT opened major service on the Lexington Avenue Line, creating a new north–south trunk on Manhattan’s East Side. Soon after, the IRT shifted to the “H system,” with east-side and west-side main lines connected by the 42nd Street Shuttle—improving capacity and simplifying operations.
The Montague Street Tunnel began revenue service, providing a new East River crossing for BMT subway trains between Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. This added flexibility to routing and reduced pressure on older bridge connections by creating another high-capacity underwater link.
The Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT) took over the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company’s assets following bankruptcy. The change reflected financial stress on private operators and foreshadowed the larger shift toward municipal ownership that would come in 1940.
The city created the New York City Board of Transportation (BOT) to oversee city-run transit planning, construction, and operations. This strengthened municipal control and laid the groundwork for building a city-owned subway system to compete with the private companies.
The Nassau Street Loop opened, completing a key Lower Manhattan BMT routing that connected through Broad Street and Fulton Street to the Montague Street Tunnel. This created new capacity into the Financial District and offered an additional path for trains from southern Brooklyn.
The first IND line opened, launching a fully city-owned subway network designed to compete with the IRT and BMT. The IND’s modern design and new trunk route expanded capacity in Manhattan and signaled a more direct municipal role in rapid-transit construction and operation.
The IND extended service under the East River via the Cranberry Street Tunnel, connecting Manhattan’s Eighth Avenue trunk to Brooklyn. This was a major step in making the IND a true borough-to-borough network rather than a Manhattan-only line.
New York City acquired the two major private systems (IRT and BMT), bringing them under municipal control alongside the IND. This unification reduced fragmented management, enabled systemwide planning, and marked a decisive shift from private leasing toward city-run transit.
The IND opened the Sixth Avenue Line, the last new Manhattan trunk built in this era, adding capacity through Midtown and connecting to other IND routes. Coming soon after unification, it also highlighted how municipal control could align new construction with broader system needs.
New York City Subway construction and system consolidation (1900–1940)
