First transatlantic telegraph cable attempt succeeds briefly
Labels: Transatlantic cable, Newfoundland IrelandIn 1858, a submarine telegraph cable was laid across the Atlantic, linking telegraph stations in Newfoundland and Ireland. It proved that near-instant communication across an ocean was possible, even though the 1858 cable soon failed and service stopped. This breakthrough set the stage for later, more durable undersea cable systems that would eventually feed traffic into New York–New Jersey commercial hubs.
