Regular transatlantic telephone service began in 1927 using long-wave radio. Radio links made calling possible but were limited by noise, weather, and scarce radio spectrum, creating pressure for a higher-capacity, more reliable undersea cable solution.
On 1 December 1953, the UK Postmaster General announced the agreement to build the first transatlantic telephone cable system, later known as TAT-1. The project brought together the UK General Post Office, AT&T, and Canada’s overseas telecommunications partner, setting the financing and governance needed for a major international build.
TAT-1 depended on several postwar breakthroughs: coaxial cable to carry many voice channels, polyethylene insulation to protect the conductor, and highly reliable vacuum-tube repeaters to boost signals under the ocean. These choices made it possible to send clear voice signals thousands of kilometers without frequent failures.
In 1955, cable ships began laying the deep-sea and shore-end sections for TAT-1, working in harsh North Atlantic conditions. Because repeaters amplified signals in only one direction, the system required two separate submarine cables—one for each direction of speech transmission.
In 1956, the second transatlantic cable was finished, completing two-way undersea capacity. The build also included connecting infrastructure: the route ran from near Oban, Scotland to Clarenville, Newfoundland, and then onward through regional links to connect with wider North American and UK networks.
On 25 September 1956, TAT-1 was officially inaugurated, marking the first transoceanic undersea cable system built for telephone calls across the Atlantic. Initial capacity was 36 channels (about 35 simultaneous calls plus one channel used for multiple telegraph circuits), dramatically improving call quality and reliability compared with radio.
In its first 24 hours of public service, TAT-1 carried hundreds of calls between London and North America, demonstrating strong pent-up demand. The rapid traffic growth helped justify later upgrades to squeeze more capacity out of the same physical cable.
In May 1957, the new cable was used to carry a live performance by singer and civil rights activist Paul Robeson from New York to an audience in London. The event illustrated how improved long-distance voice links could support culture and political organizing, not only business and government calls.
Engineers increased the number of voice channels on TAT-1 from 36 to 48 by narrowing the bandwidth allocated to each channel. This was an early example of improving capacity through signal engineering rather than laying an entirely new cable.
In June 1960, TAT-1 implemented time-assignment speech interpolation (TASI), a technique that reuses channels during natural pauses in conversation. TASI substantially increased the effective number of speech circuits, helping the system keep pace with rising demand without changing the seafloor cable.
In 1963, the Moscow–Washington hotline began operation as a text-based teletype link to reduce the risk of miscommunication during crises. Sources note that TAT-1 carried the Washington-to-London portion of the primary route, showing how a commercial cable became part of Cold War-era emergency communications infrastructure.
By the late 1970s, newer transatlantic cable systems offered far higher capacity and more modern electronics, reducing the need for TAT-1. TAT-1 was ultimately taken out of service around 1978–1979, ending the first chapter of transatlantic telephone cables but leaving a clear legacy for later coaxial and fiber-optic networks.
