Telecom operators in Asia and the Pacific began formal planning for a new trans‑Pacific submarine cable system later known as Asia‑America Gateway (AAG). This early proposal stage mattered because it set the route concept and the multi‑company ownership model needed to fund and operate a cable spanning Southeast Asia to the U.S. West Coast.
The AAG project defined a roughly 20,000 km cable system linking Southeast Asia to the United States via Guam and Hawaii. It also settled on key landing locations (including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Guam, Hawaii, and California), which shaped how countries in the region would exchange internet traffic with North America.
AAG reached its “ready for service” milestone, meaning the system was complete enough to carry live traffic. This created an additional major route between Southeast Asia and the U.S., improving redundancy (backup options) compared with relying on fewer older international paths.
Industry announcements marked AAG’s launch period and the start of commercial availability of services on the new route. For operators and end users, this was the practical handoff from “built” to “usable,” enabling new wholesale bandwidth sales and international connectivity plans.
AAG underwent maintenance on the segment toward Hong Kong, and service restoration took longer than expected due to weather and operational challenges for repair ships. The event highlighted a persistent reality for undersea infrastructure: even planned work can create noticeable slowdowns when repair windows shift.
AAG suffered a break offshore Vietnam, reducing the country’s international internet capacity and forcing providers to reroute traffic. The incident showed how a single fault near a landing area can quickly affect everyday services that depend on overseas servers.
A segment off Vietnam’s coast near Vung Tau was damaged, again disrupting international bandwidth on the AAG route. Repairs were completed later in July, underscoring both the vulnerability of near‑shore segments and the dependence on specialized repair scheduling.
Another AAG fault occurred on the Vietnam–Hong Kong portion, causing slowdowns across several connected markets. This cluster of incidents helped drive more attention to traffic diversity—using multiple cables and land routes—so that one break would not cause a major nationwide slowdown.
AAG was cut on January 5, about 117 km from the Vung Tau landing station, and Vietnam reported large impacts on international connectivity. Repair updates described multiple rupture points and a staged restoration process, illustrating that a single “outage” can involve several physical faults.
After a problem detected in late October 2021 on the Vietnam–Hong Kong branch, AAG repairs were repeatedly postponed before being completed in March 2022. The episode showed how logistics, permitting, and vessel availability can stretch restoration timelines well beyond the date a fault is first identified.
Vietnamese providers reported simultaneous problems across several international cables and published repair schedules, including an AAG repair window planned for late March to early April 2023. This period mattered because it demonstrated regional risk when multiple systems degrade at once, raising the importance of redundancy and traffic engineering (rerouting).
Reporting in late 2023 indicated an AAG problem near Vietnam’s Vung Tau landing area had been repaired and that Vietnam’s five major international undersea cables were operating normally at that time. This served as a short-term “stabilization point” after a long period of recurring faults and overlapping maintenance windows.
As of the most recently documented system status, AAG continues operating as an in‑service trans‑Pacific route connecting Southeast Asia to the U.S. via Guam and Hawaii. Its long-term legacy is twofold: it expanded capacity and route diversity, but its history of disruptions also pushed operators and governments to invest in additional cables and stronger redundancy planning.
