In 1910, just before the major surge northward, only about 11% of African Americans lived outside the South. Jim Crow segregation, disfranchisement (blocking people from voting), and the threat of racial violence shaped daily life in much of the region. This starting point helps explain why the later movement to northern cities was so historically significant.
In the early 1910s, many Black southerners faced limited farm opportunities as tenant farming and sharecropping kept families in debt. Economic stress in cotton areas and worsening living conditions made relocation more thinkable. These pressures set the stage for a larger wave once strong “pull” factors emerged in northern industry.
As the boll weevil spread through the South’s cotton regions in the 1910s, it damaged crops and reduced income for farmers and laborers. For families already trapped in low-wage agricultural work, this added another reason to leave. The agricultural shock reinforced migration as an economic survival strategy.
By the mid-1910s, Black newspapers helped spread information about jobs and living conditions in northern cities. The Chicago Defender became especially influential by publishing letters, travel advice, and reports encouraging migration. This media network helped turn individual moves into a broader, shared movement.
On April 6, 1917, the United States entered World War I. War production increased demand for industrial labor, and northern employers sought workers to fill expanding factories and railroads. This wartime “pull” factor helped accelerate the First Great Migration.
The Chicago Defender publicized a “Great Northern Drive” scheduled to begin on May 15, 1917, encouraging coordinated travel north. Even when travel plans were informal, setting a date signaled that large numbers of people were preparing to move. The campaign illustrates how migration could be organized through information, not government policy.
In early July 1917, white mobs attacked Black residents in East St. Louis, Illinois, amid labor tensions and racial hostility toward new migrants. The violence killed many people and forced thousands of Black residents to flee. Events like this showed that racism and danger could follow migrants north, shaping both migration decisions and political organizing.
On July 28, 1917, roughly 10,000 African Americans marched silently down Fifth Avenue in New York City to protest lynching and mass violence, including East St. Louis. The march linked migration-era violence to national demands for civil rights and federal protection. It also demonstrated the growing political visibility of Black communities in northern cities.
The Chicago Race Riot began on July 27, 1919, during a period of widespread racial violence often called the “Red Summer.” Britannica links the conflict to pressures intensified by large-scale African American migration, job competition, and overcrowded housing. The violence underlined that migration offered new opportunities but did not end discrimination.
By 1920, major destinations such as Chicago saw dramatic population growth in Black neighborhoods, driven in part by continued movement from the South. In Chicago, the Black population rose from about 44,000 in 1910 to more than 109,000 in 1920. These rapid changes increased demand for housing and jobs and heightened racial conflict in some places.
The Immigration Act of 1924 (Johnson–Reed Act) restricted immigration through national quotas and other controls, taking effect in late May 1924. With fewer new immigrants arriving, some industries increasingly relied on internal migration for labor, including Black migrants from the South. The law reshaped who could enter the country and indirectly affected labor markets in growing northern cities.
By 1930, the First Great Migration had moved roughly 1.5 million African Americans from the rural South to cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Chicago. The movement helped build large, lasting Black urban communities that influenced politics, labor, and culture in the North and Midwest. Although migration continued after 1930, this first wave marked a major shift in where Black Americans lived and how U.S. cities developed.
