Iraq publicly executed 14 people accused of spying for Israel, including nine Jews, in a widely publicized event. The hangings deepened fear and isolation for the small Jewish population that remained, reinforcing that emigration—often quietly—was the safest path for many.
By 1972, Jewish populations across many Arab countries had fallen sharply compared with 1948, reflecting decades of violence, restrictive laws, expulsions, and organized emigration. The result was a major demographic and cultural transformation: long-established Jewish communities became small remnants, while most refugees rebuilt their lives mainly in Israel, France, and other destinations.
