In the 1500s, European colonies in the Caribbean and Brazil rapidly expanded plantation agriculture, especially sugar, and relied heavily on enslaved African labor. As slavery grew, some enslaved people resisted by escaping into difficult terrain and forming self-defended settlements. These early conditions set the stage for maroon (runaway) communities and wider escape networks.
By the early 1600s, fugitive enslaved Africans and their descendants formed settlements in the interior of northeastern Brazil that became known collectively as Palmares. These communities used remoteness, agriculture, and defense to survive repeated attacks. Palmares became a major example of long-term maroon state-building in the Atlantic world.
Over the 1600s, Palmares developed as a cluster of settlements (often called quilombos or mocambos) rather than one village. Its size and organization—supported by farming and raids—made it hard for colonial forces to eliminate. Palmares’s durability influenced how planters and colonial governments thought about the risks of escape and rebellion.
By around 1670, Palmares had recognized leadership, including Ganga Zumba, who is often described as one of its first confirmed leaders. The leadership structure helped coordinate defense, diplomacy, and relations among multiple settlements. This period shows Palmares functioning as more than an ad hoc refuge—it operated with governance and collective strategy.
After decades of conflict, Portuguese forces launched major campaigns against Palmares. The key stronghold, often identified as Cerca do Macaco, fell in early 1694, marking a turning point that broke the political center of the maroon polity. Even after this defeat, resistance continued in the region for a time in smaller, less centralized groups.
Zumbi, widely remembered as Palmares’s last major leader, was killed on November 20, 1695, after the main settlement’s destruction. His death symbolized the end of Palmares as a large, unified maroon state, even though smaller quilombos and escape efforts persisted. Over time, Zumbi became a powerful reference point for Black resistance in Brazil’s historical memory.
In 1739, after years of fighting, the British and the Leeward Maroons in Jamaica—led by Cudjoe (Kojo)—signed a peace treaty. The agreement recognized Maroon freedom and land while also requiring them to stop attacking plantations and to return future runaways. This treaty formalized a major maroon community as a semi-autonomous force within a slave society.
In 1740, the Windward Maroons in Jamaica signed a land grant agreement with British authorities. The arrangement reinforced the pattern set by the earlier treaty: colonial governments sometimes chose negotiation when military suppression was costly or uncertain. These agreements shaped escape networks by creating recognized Maroon towns that could either shelter or, by treaty obligation, police runaways.
On September 19, 1762, the Saramaka Maroons and the Dutch colonial government in Suriname signed a peace treaty. The treaty is a key example of a colonial power recognizing a maroon society through formal negotiation rather than total military defeat. Such treaties affected escape networks by defining territories, rules for movement, and political relationships between maroon towns and colonial authorities.
The Berbice Rebellion began on February 23, 1763, in the Dutch colony of Berbice (in today’s Guyana). Enslaved rebels seized territory and attempted to negotiate political control, reflecting goals beyond individual escape. The revolt’s duration and organization highlighted how maroon-style warfare and broader rebellions could threaten plantation regimes.
From 1768, Dutch authorities and their allies fought a long conflict against the Aluku (also known as “Boni’s people”), a maroon group operating near Suriname’s eastern frontier. The wars show how maroon resistance could become sustained guerrilla conflict, not just isolated flight. Over time, pressure from these campaigns pushed some Aluku communities across borders, linking maroon survival to regional geography and diplomacy.
Bokilifu Boni, a prominent Aluku guerrilla leader, was killed on February 19, 1793. His death marked a significant moment in the broader Boni Wars and reflects the intense military pressure colonial authorities used against maroon groups. Even with leaders killed, maroon societies often adapted by relocating, reorganizing, and maintaining cultural and family networks.
In 1795–1796, conflict broke out between British authorities and the Maroons of Trelawny Town in Jamaica (the Second Maroon War). After surrender and a disputed peace arrangement, many Trelawny Town Maroons were deported from Jamaica. This outcome shows a shift from earlier treaty recognition toward removal, disrupting established maroon communities and their local escape networks.
On March 25, 1807, Britain passed the Slave Trade Act, prohibiting the transatlantic slave trade in the British Empire. The law did not end slavery itself, but it changed the international political and naval context around slave trafficking. Over the long run, increased enforcement and diplomacy helped constrain slave-ship routes, affecting both plantation labor supply and the broader conditions that shaped escape and resistance.
In 1850, Brazil enacted the Queirós Law, making the transatlantic slave trade illegal under Brazilian law. The measure came amid strong British pressure and reflected changing international constraints on slave trafficking. Although slavery continued inside Brazil for decades, ending the legal import trade altered the system’s future and helped close the era in which new arrivals constantly fed plantation expansion—an important background shift for later Afro-Brazilian community formation and memory of quilombos.
