Spain’s crown authorized the transport of enslaved Africans to Hispaniola to address labor demands created by colonization and the collapse of Indigenous populations from disease and exploitation. This helped set an early legal and commercial precedent for moving captives across the Atlantic into the Americas.
King Charles I of Spain (Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor) issued an asiento (a royal contract) that expanded authorization to import enslaved Africans into Spanish America. These contracts helped turn slave trafficking into a regularized, profit-driven system tied to European empires and Atlantic shipping routes.
Enslaved Africans in the Spanish colony of Santo Domingo (Hispaniola) staged what is often cited as the earliest recorded slave rebellion in the Americas. The revolt was suppressed, and colonial authorities responded by tightening laws meant to control enslaved people—showing that resistance began early and shaped colonial policy.
English privateer John Hawkins made a profitable slave-trading voyage in 1562–1563, transporting enslaved Africans to Spanish America. His success helped pull England more directly into the transatlantic slave trade and encouraged later English participation at a larger scale.
In late August 1619, about 20–30 captive Africans arrived at Point Comfort (in today’s Hampton, Virginia) aboard the White Lion after being taken from the San Juan Bautista. This is the first documented arrival of Africans in mainland English North America, linking British American colonization to the wider Atlantic slave-voyage system.
England chartered the Company of Royal Adventurers Trading to Africa, aiming to control English trade along the West African coast. This kind of state-backed monopoly linked private investors, royal policy, and ocean shipping to the organized buying and forced transport of enslaved people.
After the earlier company struggled financially, it was re-chartered as the Royal African Company (RAC), which became a major English institution in the slave trade. The RAC built forts and trading posts on the West African coast and sent large numbers of enslaved Africans to English colonies in the Americas.
On September 9, 1739, enslaved people in South Carolina launched the Stono Rebellion, seizing weapons and marching south toward Spanish Florida, where freedom was rumored to be possible. The uprising was suppressed, and colonists responded with stricter laws (often called slave codes) that increased surveillance and punishment—showing how resistance and repression escalated together.
In late 1781, the crew of the British slave ship Zong threw more than 130 enslaved Africans overboard, later arguing it was a financial loss covered by insurance. Public outrage and legal disputes helped abolitionists show how the trade treated human lives as cargo and money, strengthening anti-slave-trade organizing in Britain.
The British Parliament passed the Slave Trade Act in 1807, banning British participation in the transatlantic slave trade. Britain then used naval patrols and diplomacy to pressure other states, making suppression of slave voyages a major feature of 19th-century Atlantic politics.
President Thomas Jefferson signed the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves in 1807, and it took effect on January 1, 1808—the earliest date allowed by the U.S. Constitution. The law did not end slavery inside the United States, but it formally ended legal transatlantic slave importation into U.S. ports (while illegal smuggling continued).
A British–Spanish treaty set May 30, 1820, as the date by which the slave trade would be abolished across Spain’s dominions, with earlier restrictions applying north of the equator. Even with legal bans, enforcement varied and illegal voyages persisted, but treaties like this narrowed the space for “legal” slave shipping.
Brazil’s parliament enacted the Queirós Law (Lei Eusébio de Queirós) in 1850, making the transatlantic slave trade illegal in Brazil under rising British pressure and naval actions. Because Brazil was a major destination for slave voyages, this law marked a turning point toward ending large-scale transatlantic trafficking to the Americas (though slavery inside Brazil continued until 1888).
Despite U.S. law banning Atlantic slave imports, the schooner Clotilda illegally brought about 110 African captives to Mobile Bay, Alabama, in 1860. The voyage illustrates how smuggling continued after legal abolition, and it is closely tied to the later founding of Africatown by survivors and their descendants.
Scholars and institutions built the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database (SlaveVoyages), assembling voyage-by-voyage evidence for tens of thousands of crossings and estimating overall scale. By compiling shipping records across many archives, the project has helped quantify the forced migration—about 12.5 million embarked and about 10.7 million disembarked—and made research on routes from West Africa to the Americas more transparent and accessible.
