Shackleton announces trans-Antarctic crossing plan
Labels: Ernest Shackleton, Endurance, Ross SeaErnest Shackleton launched the British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition with the goal of making the first crossing of Antarctica via the South Pole. The plan depended on two groups: the Weddell Sea Party (Shackleton on Endurance) to land on the Weddell Sea side, and the Ross Sea Party (on Aurora) to lay supply depots on the Ross Sea side. This two-part design shaped both the expedition’s ambition and its later risks.
