In 1818, William Edward Parry served under Captain John Ross on a British Admiralty voyage to explore Baffin Bay and look for an entrance to the Northwest Passage. Ross turned back after concluding that Lancaster Sound was blocked, but Parry was not convinced by that judgment. This disagreement helped set up Parry’s later command of a new expedition focused on pushing west through Lancaster Sound.
In May 1819, Parry left Britain as commander of HMS Hecla, with HMS Griper under Matthew Liddon as the companion vessel. The expedition’s mission was to find and chart a navigable route westward—part of Britain’s renewed push for Arctic exploration after the Napoleonic Wars. The two-ship plan aimed to balance capability (the larger Hecla) with additional support and manpower (Griper).
Reaching Lancaster Sound, Parry demonstrated that Ross’s “blocked” route was in fact open enough to attempt a westward passage. The ships moved into Barrow Strait and began mapping islands and waterways that later became central to understanding the Arctic archipelago. This was a major turning point because it established a plausible sea route into the high Arctic from Baffin Bay.
In early September 1819, Parry’s expedition crossed the longitude of 110° west while operating within the Arctic Circle. Under an 1818 Parliamentary reward scheme, this qualified the officers and crew for a £5,000 prize for reaching that benchmark. The award mattered because it tied exploration to measurable goals and helped justify continued government funding.
By late September 1819, ice conditions forced Parry to stop and prepare for the Arctic winter at a sheltered anchorage on Melville Island, later known as Winter Harbour. The ships were secured and adapted for long months of darkness and extreme cold. This wintering was historically important because it showed that a well-supplied Royal Navy crew could survive a full winter at such high latitude with relatively limited loss of life.
During the long winter of 1819–1820, Parry organized structured activities to protect the crew’s health and morale, including staged plays and a handwritten shipboard newspaper. These routines helped reduce the risk of depression, conflict, and inactivity during months of confinement. The approach became a model for later polar expeditions facing similar psychological and medical risks in isolation.
After the ice loosened in 1820, Parry attempted to advance farther west beyond Melville Island toward the next reaches of the Arctic channel system. Thick, persistent sea ice prevented safe progress, and continued attempts risked trapping both vessels for another winter in exposed waters. Parry’s decision to turn back reflected a growing understanding that ice conditions—not just geography—could decide whether the Northwest Passage was navigable.
Parry brought Hecla and Griper back to Britain in November 1820, concluding an absence of about eighteen months. The voyage returned with major new mapping and proof that Lancaster Sound could lead deep into the archipelago, even though the full passage was still blocked by ice. Public and official interest remained high, helping drive plans for another attempt by a different route.
In 1821, Parry’s official account of the 1819–1820 expedition was published in London by John Murray. The publication mattered because it spread detailed observations, charts, and practical lessons about wintering, navigation in ice, and Arctic geography. It also helped build scientific and public support for continued exploration aimed at finding a complete Northwest Passage.
By the end of this 1818–1821 period, Parry’s work had overturned the idea that Lancaster Sound was a dead end and had mapped key parts of the island chain later critical to Northwest Passage navigation. At the same time, the expedition showed that sea ice could halt progress even when the geography looked promising. The combined result was a shift toward repeated, better-equipped expeditions and a more realistic view of the Passage as a long-term project rather than a single voyage.
