In spring 1926, the Italian-built semi-rigid airship Norge repositioned to King’s Bay (Ny-Ålesund) on Spitsbergen (Svalbard) to stage a trans-Arctic flight. The move reflected a growing belief that long-range aircraft could do what sledging and ships struggled to do—cross the Arctic Ocean quickly and document it from above.
During the Amundsen–Ellsworth transpolar flight, Norge passed over the geographic North Pole on 1926-05-12. This flight is widely treated as the first verified visit to the North Pole and demonstrated that airships could reach and cross the central Arctic in a single expedition rather than over many months.
After the pole overflight, the Norge continued across the Arctic Ocean and reached Alaska, landing near Teller on 1926-05-14. The flight showed that the air route could link continents over polar ice, but it also highlighted the risks of operating a hydrogen-filled airship in difficult weather and landing conditions.
Umberto Nobile’s new airship Italia made its first flight in April 1928, built for a new series of Arctic flights. The project aimed to go beyond a single dramatic crossing by conducting repeated survey flights from a fixed base in Svalbard.
On 1928-05-23, the Italia left King’s Bay (Ny-Ålesund) for a polar flight with Nobile as commander and pilot. The expedition planned to explore and map Arctic areas by air, using Svalbard as a launch point for long-distance flights over the pack ice.
The Italia reached the North Pole around midnight (reported as 1928-05-24 in many accounts) but could not safely land a party onto the ice as planned. The crew instead performed a symbolic drop of items and turned back toward Svalbard, entering worsening weather that would shape the disaster on the return leg.
On 1928-05-25, the Italia crashed onto the drifting ice pack near Nordaustlandet (eastern Svalbard). Ten men were thrown onto the ice (with one immediate fatality), while six crew members were carried away with the still-buoyant airship envelope, never to be found.
After the crash, survivors used emergency equipment—including a radio saved from the wreck—to send distress calls and guide rescuers. Their shelter became known as the “Red Tent,” a vivid symbol of survival while international ships and aircraft tried to locate the moving ice floe.
By early June 1928, multiple countries were mounting searches by sea and air from the Svalbard region, reflecting both humanitarian urgency and national prestige. Scientific journals reported the growing concern and the dispatch of search parties as days passed without firm news of the crew’s condition.
On 1928-06-18, famed explorer Roald Amundsen vanished while flying in a French Latham 47 seaplane toward the rescue effort. Debris was later found, and it is generally believed the aircraft crashed into the Barents Sea—turning the rescue into a wider tragedy.
On 1928-07-12, the Soviet icebreaker Krasin reached and rescued the remaining survivors from the ice, ending a weeks-long ordeal. The rescue became one of the most famous international operations in Arctic history and underscored how dangerous polar aviation still was—even after reaching the Pole.
By 1928-07-19, Krasin arrived back at King’s Bay (Ny-Ålesund) with the rescued men. The return marked a clear endpoint to the crisis phase of the expedition and left a lasting lesson: airships had opened new possibilities for Arctic exploration, but their limits—weather, icing, navigation, and rescue logistics—could be fatal.
