Labels: British Admiralty, Sir GeorgeIn the mid-1870s, the British Admiralty organized a major Arctic effort to test the idea of an “open polar sea” and to push toward the North Pole via Smith Sound (between Greenland and Ellesmere Island). The expedition was also designed as a scientific voyage, collecting observations on weather, magnetism, and natural history along the route. Sir George Strong Nares was appointed commander of the two-ship expedition.
