A widely cited planning paper described IPY as an “intensive burst” of polar research and observations, organized around six themes. It also described international oversight through an ICSU–WMO joint structure and a two-year observing period to capture full annual cycles at both poles.
The U.S. National Science Foundation released a dedicated funding solicitation to support IPY research and related activities. This call helped mobilize U.S. institutions to join international projects and to plan logistics for Arctic and Antarctic fieldwork during 2007–2009.

The official IPY observing period ended on March 1, 2009, closing the planned two-year window. By then, IPY had supported large-scale, internationally coordinated measurements across atmosphere, ocean, ice (the cryosphere), ecosystems, and human systems, designed to leave lasting data and infrastructure.
The International Polar Year Oslo Science Conference convened researchers to share results and discuss future directions after the field campaign. The conference also served as a focal point for IPY’s broader impacts, including education and data practices intended to outlast the observing period.
At the Oslo IPY Science Conference, the international IPY programme office announced the Polar Information Commons. The goal was to make polar research data easier to find, share, and properly attribute, strengthening IPY’s long-term data legacy beyond individual projects.
