ESA’s original CryoSat satellite was launched to measure polar ice, but a launch-sequence anomaly prevented it from reaching orbit. ESA reported that a missing command caused the second-stage engine to keep burning until fuel ran out, so the spacecraft fell into the planned drop zone north of Greenland. The loss created an immediate gap in Europe’s planned satellite record of ice-sheet elevation and sea-ice conditions.
ESA documented the mission’s main measurement approach around the Synthetic Aperture Interferometric Radar Altimeter (SIRAL). SIRAL was designed to measure ice-sheet elevation and sea-ice freeboard (the height of ice above the water), which can be used to estimate ice thickness. The instrument’s design—using bursts of radar pulses—helped improve measurement detail compared with conventional radar altimeters.
ESA’s Earth Observation Programme Board approved building and launching a replacement mission, CryoSat-2. ESA framed the decision as a response to strong scientific demand to restart the ice-monitoring mission after the 2005 loss. This set the program’s “modern” phase in motion, with updated hardware and a rebuilt ground system.
CryoSat-2 launched on 8 April 2010 and separated successfully, with ESA receiving confirmation signals shortly afterward. The satellite entered a near-polar orbit designed to observe high latitudes where sea ice and ice sheets are most important for sea level and climate. This launch re-established ESA’s dedicated satellite capability for measuring ice thickness and elevation changes.
After roughly six months of on-orbit testing, ESA concluded commissioning and transitioned CryoSat-2 into routine operations. This step mattered because it marked the point when the mission’s measurements could be treated as stable and reliable for sustained scientific use. From here, CryoSat-2 became a regular source for tracking changes across Greenland, Antarctica, and polar oceans.
CryoSat-2 helped pioneer satellite radar altimetry modes that sharpen measurements along the satellite’s ground track. By processing bursts of pulses coherently (Synthetic Aperture Radar, or SAR), CryoSat-2 could better resolve small features like leads (cracks) in sea ice, which are important reference points for estimating freeboard. This improved the usefulness of satellite altimetry for mapping sea-ice thickness patterns.
CryoSat-2’s nominal mission length was about 3.5 years, completing in late 2013, but the satellite continued operating beyond that baseline. Continued operations mattered because long time series are essential for distinguishing short-term weather-driven variability from longer-term trends in ice change. The extended mission also supported ongoing improvements in processing and interpretation of altimetry over complex ice surfaces.
ESA reported that operators noticed CryoSat-2 was consuming its cold-gas nitrogen faster than expected, and later identified a leak associated with one of the attitude thrusters. The leak threatened to end the mission around 2025 because low propellant levels can prevent reliable pointing and orbit maintenance. This became a major turning point, shifting attention from purely scientific priorities to spacecraft survival planning.
CryoSat-2 altimetry became a key input to routine sea-ice thickness data products used by European services. Copernicus described Arctic products derived from CryoSat-2 altimetry, including higher-level gridded products and combinations with other missions to improve coverage and thin-ice performance. This helped move CryoSat results from research-only use toward broader environmental monitoring.
On 21 November 2023, ESA commanded CryoSat-2 to swap from its primary propulsion system to a backup system to reduce the impact of the leak. ESA said the change had the potential to extend the satellite’s life by years, because the backup thrusters had not been used previously. This action helped preserve continuity in polar altimetry measurements, which is especially valuable for long-term comparisons.
CryoSat-2 measurements were also used in experimental and “quick look” products aimed at supporting seasonal forecasting and other time-sensitive needs. NASA described a quick-look dataset based primarily on CryoSat-2 radar altimetry inputs and ancillary information (such as snow and concentration fields) to estimate sea-ice thickness and related parameters. This shows how CryoSat altimetry fed into faster-turnaround analysis beyond standard reprocessing cycles.
By April 2025, CryoSat-2 had reached 15 years since launch while still operating, far beyond its original design life. Sustained operations strengthened the mission’s legacy by extending the observational record used to study changes in sea ice and the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. The long record also helped make CryoSat-2 a key reference mission for polar altimetry methods and applications.
