CryoSat mission lost in launch failure
Labels: CryoSatESA’s original CryoSat satellite was launched to measure polar ice, but a launch-sequence anomaly prevented it from reaching orbit. ESA reported that a missing command caused the second-stage engine to keep burning until fuel ran out, so the spacecraft fell into the planned drop zone north of Greenland. The loss created an immediate gap in Europe’s planned satellite record of ice-sheet elevation and sea-ice conditions.
