IGY launches modern Antarctic field science
Labels: International Geophysical, Antarctic logisticsThe International Geophysical Year (IGY) created a coordinated international push to study Antarctica with modern instruments and year-round stations. It expanded logistics—ships, aircraft, tracked vehicles, and depots—that made longer geological fieldwork in high-latitude mountain ranges more feasible. This set the stage for sustained geological work in the Transantarctic Mountains beyond short coastal trips.
