Carl E. Akeley and his team launched an American Museum of Natural History (AMNH)-backed expedition to British East Africa. The trip combined field collecting with detailed observation meant to support realistic habitat displays in museums. This expedition helped set Akeley’s long-term goal of building a major “African Hall” for the AMNH.
During the 1909–1911 expedition, Akeley met Theodore Roosevelt’s Smithsonian-sponsored safari party and hunted elephants for the AMNH. The collaboration reflected how museum science, big-game hunting, and public education were closely linked at the time. Specimens and field notes from this period fed directly into plans for museum dioramas showing animals in place and context.
While collecting on Mount Kenya, Akeley was attacked by a bull elephant and badly injured. His long recovery became a turning point in his thinking about how to present African wildlife to the public. He increasingly pushed for a full African Hall rather than a smaller, single-species display.
As Akeley recovered from his injuries and continued fieldwork, he shaped a plan for a large museum hall built around habitat dioramas—carefully staged scenes showing animals in lifelike settings. This concept emphasized ecology and place, not just trophies. It became the guiding purpose for much of his later AMNH work.
After roughly two years in British East Africa and Uganda, Akeley’s party returned to New York. The expedition’s specimens, photographs, and field experience strengthened the case for building an African Hall at the AMNH. It also helped establish Akeley as a central figure in early 20th-century museum collecting and exhibition design.
Akeley publicly laid out plans for a new African Hall at the AMNH. The idea centered on immersive, artist-and-scientist-built dioramas designed to tell a coherent story about African landscapes and animals. This publication marked a shift from field collecting alone to a long, organized exhibition-building project.
Akeley led an AMNH expedition to the Virunga region to study and collect mountain gorillas. The trip produced specimens, notes, and motion pictures that became key references for museum displays and public understanding of gorillas. It also sharpened Akeley’s belief that protecting habitat was necessary if wildlife was to survive.
The AMNH opened a major elephant group display linked to Akeley’s African Hall vision. Large centerpiece groups like this were meant to anchor an educational experience built around lifelike scenes. It showed that Akeley’s concept was moving from planning into public exhibition, even while the full hall remained unfinished.
Akeley published a book describing his experiences and views shaped by African fieldwork. The memoir helped translate expedition life—collecting, filming, and observing—into a public narrative that supported museum education and conservation goals. It also reinforced his reputation as both a collector and a public communicator of natural history.
A Belgian colonial decree created Albert National Park as a protected area centered on the Virunga volcano region. The park was designed in large part to safeguard mountain gorillas and is widely described as Africa’s first national park. This marked a major shift from collecting animals to protecting living populations in place.
Akeley returned to the Kivu/Virunga area as part of a museum-linked scientific effort that included detailed mapping work associated with defining and managing the park landscape. This kind of expedition blended natural history research, museum collecting priorities, and the practical needs of a new protected area. It also illustrates how institutions and colonial governments shaped early conservation in Central Africa.
Akeley died during his final Central African expedition in what was then Albert National Park. He was buried on Mount Mikeno, tying his personal legacy to the gorilla sanctuary he helped promote. His death ended the 1909–1926 phase of museum-led collecting he embodied, while his hall and conservation impact continued through others.
