Nansen proposes drifting with Arctic pack ice
Labels: Fridtjof Nansen, Fram expeditionIn 1890, Fridtjof Nansen presented a plan to reach the high Arctic by freezing a specially built ship into the sea ice and letting currents carry it across the Arctic Ocean. The idea aimed to test the direction of polar ice drift and to gather new measurements of Arctic conditions while the ship drifted. This plan set the scientific purpose for what became the Fram expedition.
