In 1890, Fridtjof Nansen presented a plan to reach the high Arctic by freezing a specially built ship into the sea ice and letting currents carry it across the Arctic Ocean. The idea aimed to test the direction of polar ice drift and to gather new measurements of Arctic conditions while the ship drifted. This plan set the scientific purpose for what became the Fram expedition.
Fram sailed from Kristiania (Oslo) with a crew of 13 on June 24, 1893. The voyage was designed to reach the waters near Siberia and then deliberately enter the pack ice. From the start, the expedition combined exploration with systematic observations of weather, magnetism, and the ocean.
On September 22, 1893, Fram became enclosed by sea ice near the New Siberian Islands region, beginning a long drift. Nansen’s ship design was meant to be lifted by squeezing ice rather than crushed, allowing the expedition to survive years in the pack. This moment marked the start of continuous natural history and environmental observation from a moving ice station.
As the drift continued, the crew maintained a full program of measurements, including meteorology, magnetism, and oceanography, while also recording biological observations when possible. The expedition treated Fram as a platform for repeated, standardized data collection over time, not just a transportation tool. This approach helped make the voyage important for Arctic science, not only for exploration.
During the drift, the expedition took depth soundings that increased from about 6,000 feet to about 9,000 feet as Fram moved into the central Arctic. These measurements supported the idea that the Arctic Ocean is a deep basin rather than a shallow sea with nearby hidden land. This finding reshaped scientific expectations about Arctic geography and ocean structure.
In 1894, Nansen developed an ocean-water sampler later known as the Nansen bottle. It allowed researchers to collect water at a chosen depth and often paired with thermometers to record temperature and pressure. This tool helped make deep-water sampling more systematic and influenced later oceanographic instruments.
On March 14, 1895, with Fram at about 84°4′ N, Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen began a dogsled journey toward the North Pole. Their departure was a strategic decision: the ship’s drift was not expected to pass close enough to the Pole, so they attempted to reach it over the ice. This shift split the expedition into two parallel stories—shipboard science during the drift and field observations during extreme travel.
On April 8, 1895, Nansen and Johansen turned back at roughly 86°14′ N, a record latitude at the time. Difficult ice conditions, shifting floes, and the risk of being unable to return safely shaped the decision to retreat. Their navigation and wildlife-dependent travel also contributed observations about Arctic sea ice conditions and animal life encountered along the route.
With open water and late-season travel blocking progress, Nansen and Johansen overwintered on Frederick Jackson Island from August 26, 1895, to May 19, 1896. They lived largely by hunting, using polar bear and walrus for food and fuel. This forced winter stay provided close-up, practical observations of Arctic wildlife, survival conditions, and the local environment.
While Nansen and Johansen were away, Fram continued drifting and reached about 85°55′ N on November 15, 1895. The ship’s movement and the crew’s measurements continued to support the ice-drift concept Nansen had proposed. The drifting ship remained a stable platform for long-run environmental observations in the central Arctic.
On June 17, 1896, Nansen and Johansen unexpectedly met Frederick Jackson of the Jackson–Harmsworth expedition at Cape Flora (Franz Josef Land). The meeting provided immediate rescue support and a reliable route back to Norway. It also connected two separate Arctic expeditions, helping confirm locations and conditions in a region that was still poorly mapped.
Nansen and Johansen traveled back with Jackson’s expedition ship Windward, reaching Vardø on August 13, 1896. Their return made it possible to begin organizing and interpreting the expedition’s scientific materials and field notes. It also confirmed that survival in the high Arctic could be combined with serious scientific work, not only record-setting travel.
On June 13, 1896, a lead (an opening in sea ice) formed and Fram became navigable again after nearly three years frozen in. On August 13, 1896, Fram finally reached open water near Spitsbergen and headed home, demonstrating that the ship and drift plan had worked. This provided strong evidence for the Arctic Ocean’s drift patterns and proved the value of a purpose-built polar research ship.
In 1897, Nansen published his two-volume narrative of the expedition, widely known in English as Farthest North. The book helped explain the expedition’s methods, Arctic travel innovations, and observations to a broad audience. It also established a detailed written record that supported later scientific reporting and historical study.
Starting in 1900, the expedition’s research findings were published as The Norwegian North Polar Expedition, 1893–1896: Scientific Results. This multi-volume series organized observations and specimens into specialized studies, including topics in biology and Earth science, making the expedition’s natural history and environmental work usable to other researchers. Publishing the results transformed field notes and collections into long-term scientific references.
The Scientific Results set was published over several years, with publication information commonly given as 1900–1906. A 1906 review in Nature highlights how Fram observations led to focused studies such as “dead-water,” linking ship behavior to layered water (fresh over salt) and motivating rigorous oceanographic research. By the end of this publication period, the Fram expedition had a clear outcome: a drift voyage that advanced Arctic oceanography and made its natural history and environmental observations available in durable scientific form.
