After earlier botanical work in Europe, Richard Spruce committed to a long collecting expedition in tropical South America. He left England by ship to begin work that would last about 15 years and generate major herbarium collections for European science.
Spruce’s expedition opened in the Amazon estuary region, using Pará (now Belém) as an entry point to the basin. Starting here helped him learn local travel routes and establish networks for shipping dried plant specimens back to Europe.
Spruce traveled up the Trombetas River and into tributaries, collecting plants beyond the better-known lower Amazon corridor. This kind of side-river work mattered because plant communities can change quickly with soils, flooding cycles, and forest type.
Spruce spent a full year working from Manaos (then commonly called Barra do Rio Negro), exploring nearby forests and waterways. Using a city base made it easier to resupply and repeatedly visit collecting sites in different seasons.
While working in the northwestern Amazon/upper Rio Negro region, Spruce formally identified Banisteriopsis caapi, a key plant used in ayahuasca preparations. This linked careful botanical collecting with direct observation of Indigenous plant knowledge, though later debates would shape how outsiders interpreted these practices.
Spruce pushed farther upriver on the Rio Negro, traveling as far as São Gabriel (near the river’s cataracts). He paused for months and used canoe trips to collect on islands and tributaries, increasing the geographic range of his specimens.
Spruce moved into the Uaupés River region and set up a long headquarters near its first cataract (often described as Panuré/San Jeronymo). Concentrated time in one biologically rich area let him document many species new to European botany, especially among forest trees and understory plants.
In late 1853 and early 1854, Spruce traveled from San Carlos del Río Negro into the Casiquiare and reached the Orinoco, then attempted work around rapids and tributaries. In letters to Kew, he reported routes, rough maps, and plant observations—showing that his expedition combined geography, natural history, and collecting logistics.
After years in the Rio Negro–Orinoco systems, Spruce’s work moved west toward the Andes and the upper Amazon tributaries in Peru and Ecuador. This transition was important because elevation changes create new climate zones, and with them, many new plant communities to document.
Spruce was commissioned—through Clements R. Markham’s government-backed cinchona program—to collect seeds and young plants of Cinchona succirubra (a major quinine source). The goal was to establish cinchona cultivation outside the Andes, especially in British-controlled regions, to secure a reliable supply of antimalarial medicine.
From Ambato, Spruce reported practical steps for the cinchona work: hiring access to forests, assembling labor, and coordinating shipping plans while political instability complicated travel and timing. His correspondence shows how much the project depended on planning around flowering seasons, local land ownership, and safe transport routes.
Spruce used Guayaquil as a major export point and reported sending cinchona bark and directing seeds toward England for onward movement. These shipments were a key bridge between field collecting and institutional cultivation, linking Andean forests to Kew and then to plantation sites abroad.
Spruce produced a detailed report on cinchona forests and bark collection methods for government and scientific audiences, summarizing what he learned during the final years of his fieldwork. This documentation helped turn raw collecting into a repeatable system for cultivation and drug supply, even as it also reflected unequal colonial power over Andean resources.
By 1864, Spruce’s health had deteriorated and he returned to England, closing the main phase of his Amazon-and-Andes expedition. The end of travel did not end the impact: his many specimens and notes continued to be studied, indexed, and used by major botanical institutions.
Spruce’s travel record was published after his death as Notes of a Botanist on the Amazon & Andes (covering 1849–1864). Publication extended the expedition’s legacy by making his route descriptions, collecting experiences, and observations available to a wider research audience.
