In 1931, aviator and naturalist Richard Archbold became a Research Associate at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). This connection helped him organize and fund large-scale biological fieldwork, with specimens and data flowing back to museum collections.
On February 28, 1933, Archbold and ornithologist Austin L. Rand arrived to start the First Archbold Expedition to New Guinea. The team focused on collecting and studying plants and animals across varied habitats, beginning around Port Moresby and nearby localities.
On March 2, 1933, botanist Leonard J. Brass arrived in Port Moresby and joined Archbold and Rand. Brass’s participation strengthened the expedition’s plant collecting, helping build major botanical collections alongside zoological specimens.
On March 30, 1933, the first expedition embarked for collecting work at Yule Island and inland toward Mount Albert Edward. This stage shows the expedition’s early method: moving supplies by boat, pack animals, and human carriers to reach remote rainforest and upland sites.
On January 3, 1934, the expedition began a second leg focused on the Daru region and inland areas. By the end of the 1933–1934 work, the expedition had produced very large museum collections, showing both the scientific value and the logistical difficulty of reaching diverse habitats.
In February 1936, the Second Archbold Expedition to New Guinea began with the scientific party arriving in Port Moresby and moving toward Daru. This expedition was the first in the Archbold series to use amphibious aircraft for transportation in the field, changing how remote collecting could be supplied and coordinated.
In July 1936, a sudden storm capsized the expedition’s aircraft, forcing major changes to the original plan. The team adapted by shifting logistics to river travel, including moving specimens and supplies down the Fly River, and continued extensive lowland collecting despite the setback.
In December 1937, Austin Rand traveled to Java to negotiate permissions needed for the Third Archbold Expedition to operate in Netherlands New Guinea. This step highlights how large scientific expeditions depended not only on funding and equipment, but also on international administration and permits.
On April 23, 1938, expedition members arrived by boat in Hollandia (now Jayapura), supporting the creation of the coastal base for inland work. From this base, the expedition used aircraft reconnaissance to identify routes and sites for interior camps in mountainous terrain.
On June 10, 1938, the expedition aircraft Guba II arrived at Hollandia Base Camp. The aircraft supported reconnaissance and supply movement between camps, helping the expedition establish and maintain remote highland sites that would have been far harder to reach overland.
On July 21, 1938, the Lake Habbema camp became fully established with the arrival of the full crew and months of rations. With multiple camps linked together, the expedition could collect across different elevations and habitats, supporting comparisons of biodiversity and ecology from lowlands to high mountains.
On May 21, 1939, the last of the expedition party left New Guinea by steamer, closing the third (and final) Archbold-led prewar expedition. The end of this trip marked a transition: major interior areas had been surveyed and collected, but global events soon disrupted further work.
On July 21, 1941, Archbold founded the Archbold Biological Station at Red Hill near Lake Placid, Florida. The station became a long-term base for ecological research and conservation, created as Archbold’s New Guinea work was curtailed by the outbreak of war in the Pacific.
In March 1953, the Fourth Archbold Expedition arrived in Papua New Guinea to begin work in Eastern Papua New Guinea and the D’Entrecasteaux Islands. Led by Leonard Brass, it shows the postwar shift toward Archbold-funded expeditions that Archbold sponsored but did not personally lead in the field.
On May 17, 1953, the fourth expedition reached the highest peak of Mount Dayman while collecting from multiple camps at different elevations. This focus on elevation zones helped scientists document how species and plant communities change with altitude in New Guinea’s mountain environments.
In March 1956, the Fifth Archbold Expedition departed, again led by Leonard J. Brass. The expedition extended collecting to the southeastern mainland and islands including Fergusson, Normanby, Rossel, and Woodlark, filling gaps in biological records from places that had seen little prior museum collecting.
In January 1957, the fifth expedition returned, ending the main 1933–1956 sequence of Archbold-sponsored New Guinea field campaigns. Across these expeditions, Archbold’s program built major museum collections and helped shape methods for tropical biological exploration, including sustained, multi-site collecting and (by the late 1930s) aviation-supported logistics.
