Sarawak established Gunung Mulu National Park to protect a large area of tropical rainforest and limestone karst (terrain formed as rock dissolves, often creating caves). This legal protection created the baseline that later biodiversity and cave surveys could build on. The park’s creation also signaled that the area’s scientific value was being recognized by the state.
A major Royal Geographical Society expedition (1977–1978) came to Mulu at the invitation of Sarawak authorities, bringing a large, multi-disciplinary team. The expedition supported research across elevations, helping document rainforest ecology while also adding a dedicated caving team. This combined approach helped set a model for linking cave exploration with broader biodiversity and environmental study.
Researchers sampled soil macrofauna (larger soil animals such as ants and termites) along an elevation gradient on Gunung Mulu in February–March 1978. This type of study helped connect biodiversity patterns to altitude and changing forest types, showing how animal communities shift from lowland rainforest toward montane conditions. It also illustrates how Mulu surveys extended beyond caves to broader rainforest ecosystems.
During March–May 1978, the expedition’s caving group explored and surveyed large lengths of cave passage in the limestone hills around Gunung Api and Gunung Benarat. Their work helped reveal that Mulu contained exceptionally extensive cave systems and encouraged continued scientific and exploration partnerships with local people and Sarawak agencies. These surveys became an important foundation for later research on cave habitats and forest–karst connections.
A larger expedition returned from December 1980 to March 1981 with Sarawak government approvals, extending cave exploration substantially. The team reported major new cave passage discoveries and further development of Clearwater Cave and related systems. This period strengthened Mulu’s reputation as a world-class site for cave science and mapping, supporting later conservation and management attention.
In January 1981, explorers discovered the Sarawak Chamber inside Gua Nasib Bagus (Good Luck Cave). The chamber’s enormous size became a landmark finding for global speleology (cave science) and highlighted Mulu’s exceptional karst landscape. This kind of high-profile discovery increased international scientific interest in the park’s caves and associated ecosystems.
In 1984, Mulu received recognition as an ASEAN Heritage Park, reflecting its regional importance for nature conservation. Such designation reinforced the park’s value not only for caves but also for intact rainforest habitats and biodiversity. This added political and conservation weight to ongoing scientific work and protection efforts.
In 1984, another expedition (often referred to as “Sarawak ’84”) worked in multiple areas of the park and reported extensive new cave exploration. It extended Clearwater Cave further and discovered additional major systems, adding to the growing mapped network. The expanding cave inventory supported more targeted research on cave ecology, hydrology (water movement), and landscape evolution.
In 1985, the park officially opened to the public, shifting Mulu into a new phase that combined research, conservation, and visitor management. Tourism created new reasons to document biodiversity and protect sensitive habitats, but also increased the need for rules and monitoring. Scientific surveys became more important for guiding what areas could be accessed and how impacts could be reduced.
In 2000, UNESCO listed Gunung Mulu National Park as a World Heritage Site, recognizing both its biodiversity and its outstanding karst and cave features. This international status strengthened the case for long-term protection and research, and it raised expectations for careful management. The inscription also helped frame Mulu as a globally significant site where science and conservation must be linked.
UNESCO’s World Heritage documentation emphasizes that Mulu is important for both biodiversity and karst features and describes it as a heavily studied tropical karst area. The documentation summarizes major survey outcomes, including many vegetation zones and thousands of plant species recorded, reflecting decades of field work. This provides a clear present-day outcome of the long survey era: Mulu’s rainforest–karst system is widely recognized as globally significant and scientifically documented.
UNESCO’s State of Conservation information for the early 2000s recorded concerns about the lack of inclusion of indigenous peoples and their claims in decisions about park extension. This highlighted that biodiversity protection is not only a scientific and environmental issue, but also a social governance issue. Addressing local rights and participation can affect how field surveys are conducted and how conservation goals are met over time.
