Rocket Lab was founded by engineer Peter Beck in Auckland, New Zealand. The company’s early focus was making smaller, lower-cost rockets to serve the growing small-satellite market. This set the foundation for the Electron program and Rocket Lab’s later shift into regular commercial launches.
Rocket Lab officially opened Launch Complex 1 (LC-1) on New Zealand’s Māhia Peninsula as a private orbital launch site. Having its own launch site mattered because it helped Rocket Lab control scheduling and operations instead of waiting for shared government ranges. LC-1 later became the home base for Electron test flights and early commercial missions.
Rocket Lab flew Electron for the first time on the mission named “It’s a Test.” The flight reached space and returned valuable engineering data, even though it did not achieve orbit. This test marked Electron’s transition from development to real flight operations from a private spaceport.
Electron successfully reached orbit on its second flight, “Still Testing,” and deployed customer payloads. This was Rocket Lab’s first orbital success and a major proof point that the vehicle and launch site could support commercial missions. It also showed that small satellites could be launched on a dedicated small rocket rather than waiting for a larger rideshare.
Rocket Lab’s third Electron flight, “It’s Business Time,” is widely treated as the company’s first commercial mission. It carried multiple customer satellites and used Rocket Lab’s Curie-powered kick stage to refine the final orbit before deployment. This flight signaled the start of routine, paid launch operations rather than demonstration-only missions.
Rocket Lab announced Photon, a spacecraft platform derived from Electron’s kick stage. Photon was designed to help customers get more than “just a ride” by offering orbit-raising, hosted payload options, and complete spacecraft integration. This expanded Rocket Lab from a launch provider into a broader “mission services” company.
Rocket Lab acquired Sinclair Interplanetary, a supplier of satellite components such as attitude-control hardware. The deal strengthened Rocket Lab’s space-systems business and supported Photon by bringing more key spacecraft subsystems in-house. This was part of a strategy to offer end-to-end services: build spacecraft, then launch them.
On the “Return to Sender” mission, Rocket Lab attempted Electron first-stage recovery and successfully retrieved the stage after a controlled splashdown in the Pacific. Even without immediate reuse, recovery provided data on heating, loads, and refurbishment needs. This work aimed to lower costs and increase launch availability over time.
Rocket Lab announced the opening of Launch Complex 2 (LC-2) at Wallops Island, Virginia, aimed mainly at U.S. government missions. Adding a second launch site expanded potential orbital inclinations and supported “responsive launch,” meaning faster launches for time-sensitive payloads. This was an important step toward scaling Electron operations beyond New Zealand.
The “They Go Up So Fast” mission deployed a mix of commercial and government small satellites and also placed Rocket Lab’s Photon Pathstone into orbit. Pathstone served as an on-orbit testbed to build experience for future Photon missions, including deeper-space uses. This helped Rocket Lab move rideshare beyond simple deployment by adding in-space capability.
Electron’s “Running Out Of Toes” mission failed due to an anomaly shortly before second-stage ignition, resulting in the loss of the mission. The event mattered because it interrupted Rocket Lab’s growing launch cadence and highlighted the reliability challenges of high-frequency small launch. It also influenced how Rocket Lab approached risk and return-to-flight procedures while continuing recovery efforts.
During “There And Back Again,” Rocket Lab caught Electron’s returning first stage under parachute using a helicopter, a first for the company. Although the stage was later released and recovered from the ocean, the catch demonstrated that mid-air retrieval was feasible. This milestone supported Rocket Lab’s longer-term goal of partial reusability for an orbital small launcher.
Rocket Lab launched NASA’s CAPSTONE mission using Electron and a Photon kick stage to send the spacecraft onto a lunar transfer trajectory. The mission showcased Photon as more than a deployment stage by performing multiple engine burns to raise orbit and support deep-space operations. This broadened Rocket Lab’s commercial story from smallsat launch toward integrated launch-plus-in-space-transport services.
