Virgin Galactic was created to develop commercial suborbital flights—short trips that go above most of Earth’s atmosphere but do not reach orbit. The plan centered on air-launching a rocket plane from a carrier aircraft, based on technology from SpaceShipOne and Scaled Composites.
Virgin Galactic and Scaled Composites publicly rolled out SpaceShipTwo, naming the first vehicle VSS Enterprise. The event marked a shift from prize-winning prototypes toward a reusable passenger vehicle intended for regular flights.
VSS Enterprise performed its first crewed gliding flight after being released from the WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft (VMS Eve). Glide tests were crucial because they let pilots and engineers validate handling and landing behavior before adding rocket power.

The report also criticized the design process for not protecting against a single mistake causing a catastrophic result.
Virgin Galactic unveiled VSS Unity, the second SpaceShipTwo vehicle, built after the Enterprise loss. The rollout signaled a restart of flight testing with design and procedural changes meant to improve safety and support eventual passenger service.
VSS Unity began its own flight test campaign with glide operations, confirming aerodynamic handling and landing performance. These tests reduced risk by proving the vehicle could safely return as an unpowered glider before rocket-powered runs resumed.
Unity flew its first powered test, reaching supersonic speed (faster than sound) and demonstrating safe engine ignition, climb, and reentry configuration. This was the program’s first powered flight since the 2014 accident and a key checkpoint toward higher-altitude flights.
On a powered test known as VP-03, Unity reached about 82.7 km (51.4 miles), crossing the U.S. “astronaut wings” threshold of 50 miles (about 80 km). The flight was a turning point because it showed the system could reach near-space and return safely, even though it did not reach the 100 km Kármán line used by many international groups.
Unity flew again to near-space and carried Virgin Galactic astronaut-instructor Beth Moses as a passenger, testing the cabin experience and in-flight procedures for non-pilot occupants. This shifted the campaign from “can it fly?” to “can it support a customer-style experience?”
Virgin Galactic flew Unity 22 from Spaceport America with company founder Richard Branson onboard, alongside other crew and pilots. The mission served as a high-profile demonstration of readiness, helping validate operations at the intended commercial spaceport.
Virgin Galactic flew Unity 25 as a “final assessment” mission with company employees onboard, intended to confirm vehicle performance and procedures before selling flights as an operating service. The mission helped close the gap between experimental testing and routine operations.
Virgin Galactic’s Galactic 01 mission launched as the company’s first commercial suborbital spaceflight, carrying a crew that included Italian Air Force and Italian research participants. This flight marked the program’s shift from a long test campaign to paid operations, creating a working—if still limited—suborbital flight service.
