The Verein für Raumschiffahrt (VfR) was founded in Breslau (then Germany; today Wrocław, Poland) to promote and organize practical work toward spaceflight. It brought together writers, engineers, and amateur experimenters at a moment when rocketry was shifting from theory toward testing. The group soon became a key hub for early German liquid-fuel rocket efforts.
The journal Die Rakete served as the VfR’s main way to share ideas, reports, and plans. It helped turn scattered interest in spaceflight into an organized conversation, connecting members and attracting new supporters. This publication work mattered because it built a community that could later support hands-on experiments.
The new organization was entered into the Breslau association register, giving it a formal legal status. This helped the VfR collect dues, organize meetings, and present itself as a serious scientific-technical society. Formal registration also made it easier to publish and coordinate work across different cities.
Hermann Oberth built and tested an early liquid-fuel rocket engine at the UFA studios in Neubabelsberg. This was important because liquid propellants offered much higher performance than simple gunpowder-style rockets, but were technically harder to manage. The work influenced the VfR’s shift toward liquid-fuel development.
Max Valier carried out a successful liquid-fuel rocket test firing at the Heylandt Works. Sustained operation helped convince VfR members that liquid propellants could work outside of purely theoretical designs. It also encouraged further experiments in different locations and with different teams.
The VfR held its first member assembly in Berlin, reflecting a shift of practical activity toward the capital. Berlin offered larger audiences, more potential supporters, and access to institutions and industry. This move set the stage for a dedicated test site later that year.
Engine tests at the Chemisch-Technische Reichsanstalt (a German state technical institute) produced measured results and were documented with state certification. This mattered because it added credibility and technical feedback to amateur efforts. It also strengthened the VfR’s case that its work was more than speculation.
The VfR established the Raketenflugplatz Berlin (rocket airfield) in Berlin-Tegel as a dedicated development and launch site for liquid-fuel rockets. Having a regular test location made repeated trial-and-error possible, including building engines, launching prototypes, and improving designs. It became the center of the VfR’s most active experimental period.
Under Rudolf Nebel’s leadership, the VfR built the MIRAK III as part of its push toward flight-capable liquid rockets. Museum documentation describes key design features such as pressurized propellant feed and a water-cooled combustion chamber (the part where fuel burns to make thrust). These designs show the group was tackling real engineering problems, not just making small demonstrations.
Johannes Winkler launched the Hückel-Winkler I (HW-1), a liquid-propellant rocket, near Dessau. Even with limited performance and incomplete measurement, the attempt showed that VfR-linked experimenters were progressing from bench tests to real launches. Public launches also increased interest—along with scrutiny—around civilian rocketry.
Construction began on the Army’s rocket test facility at Kummersdorf-West. This development mattered for the VfR because the center of advanced testing was starting to move from civilian groups to the military, where funding and secrecy were greater. It marked a turning point in who would control Germany’s most capable rocket research.
Rudolf Nebel and Wernher von Braun demonstrated a large liquid rocket (MIRAK III) at Kummersdorf in the presence of senior Army figures including Becker and Dornberger. The reported results were only moderately successful, and the Army ended its support for the Berlin rocket airfield. This further weakened the VfR’s ability to operate as an independent civilian program.
Wernher von Braun received an employment contract with the Army Ordnance Office, then began work at Kummersdorf later the same year. His move reflects a broader shift: talented VfR-associated engineers increasingly sought military backing to continue large-scale rocket work. As key people left civilian efforts, the VfR’s experimental capacity declined.
The Berlin rocket launching site was closed on September 30, 1933, reportedly under a pretext such as an unpaid water bill, and control shifted toward Nazi-era military authorities. With the launch site gone, regular civilian testing became much harder to sustain. The shutdown effectively ended the VfR’s most productive launch-and-test phase.
The VfR dissolved in January 1934 as financial pressures and political conditions tightened and civilian rocket experimentation became harder to carry on. By this point, many leading participants were already moving toward military or other institutional work. The end of the society closed an important chapter in organized civilian liquid-rocket development in Germany.
