Space Shuttle Endeavour launched the Unity connecting node, becoming the first Shuttle mission to the International Space Station. The crew mated Unity with the already-orbiting Russian module Zarya, creating the first two-piece “core” of the station. This docking proved the partners could physically assemble and power up ISS hardware in space.
Space Shuttle Discovery delivered and installed the Z1 truss, an early piece of the station’s external framework. The mission also brought Pressurized Mating Adapter-3 (PMA-3), expanding Shuttle docking options for later assembly flights. These additions prepared ISS to receive large power and laboratory elements.
Space Shuttle Endeavour delivered the P6 truss segment with large solar arrays, then helped deploy them. This greatly increased electrical power, which was necessary to run systems and support more modules and science. The station’s growing “backbone” made later assembly work more practical.
Space Shuttle Atlantis delivered Destiny, the main U.S. research laboratory for the ISS. Adding Destiny shifted ISS from a small assembly into a more capable science and operations platform. With a major lab in place, Shuttle logistics flights also became more important for carrying equipment and supplies.
Space Shuttle Endeavour brought Canadarm2 (the station’s large robotic arm) and the Raffaello Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM). Canadarm2 became a key tool for assembling large station parts and later for handling visiting vehicles and cargo. Regular MPLM deliveries helped keep the station supplied while it expanded.
Space Shuttle Atlantis installed the S0 truss, a central segment of the station’s external framework. The crew also worked on the Mobile Transporter system, which moves equipment and robotic systems along rails on the truss. This strengthened the station’s ability to assemble and maintain hardware across a much larger structure.
Space Shuttle Atlantis delivered the S1 truss segment to extend the station’s framework. It also carried a Crew and Equipment Translation Aid (a human-powered cart) to help spacewalkers move tools along the station’s truss “railway.” These upgrades improved efficiency for the many spacewalks needed during assembly.
Space Shuttle Endeavour installed the P1 truss segment, continuing the station’s external backbone. The mission also supported a crew rotation, delivering Expedition Six and returning Expedition Five. This showed how Shuttle flights combined assembly work with the ongoing needs of a permanently occupied station.
After the Space Shuttle program stand-down following the 2003 Columbia accident, Discovery flew STS-114 as a “Return to Flight” mission. It re-established Shuttle support to the ISS while also testing safety and inspection approaches for the Shuttle’s thermal protection system. The mission marked the restart of major station resupply and assembly planning.
Space Shuttle Atlantis delivered the P3/P4 truss segments, restarting large-scale ISS construction after a multi-year pause. This continued the build-out needed for more power generation and future hardware mounting points. The flight signaled that the ISS could resume its planned expansion pace.
Space Shuttle Discovery continued the truss build-out by supporting installation work associated with the P5 segment. The mission also advanced a larger “rewiring” effort so the growing station could use its expanding solar power systems more effectively. These changes were important steps toward running a larger, more capable ISS.
Space Shuttle Atlantis delivered the S3/S4 truss segments and helped deploy another set of solar arrays. The mission also retracted older array hardware to prepare for a new station configuration. Increasing and managing power generation was essential as more modules and systems came online.
Space Shuttle Atlantis carried and installed Columbus, the European Space Agency’s main laboratory module on the ISS. Columbus expanded long-term research capacity and deepened international scientific use of the station. It also showed the station moving from “build the structure” toward “use the labs.”
Space Shuttle Discovery delivered the main pressurized laboratory section and robotic arm for Japan’s Kibo (Japanese Experiment Module). This substantially increased ISS research space and broadened international capabilities for experiments. The installation also demonstrated the Shuttle’s ability to deliver very large, delicate modules.
Space Shuttle Endeavour delivered Kibo’s Exposed Facility and an external logistics section, supporting experiments that can be mounted outside in open space. Five spacewalks helped install and prepare these platforms for use. This further shifted ISS operations toward sustained research and routine maintenance.
Space Shuttle Endeavour delivered Tranquility (Node 3) and the Cupola, a seven-window viewing and robotics control station. Tranquility added life-support and extra room for equipment, supporting a more capable station. The Cupola improved visibility for operating robotic arms and monitoring visiting vehicles during dockings and cargo handling.
Space Shuttle Discovery delivered Leonardo, converted from a reusable cargo module into the Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM). Making Leonardo permanent increased on-orbit storage for spare parts and supplies, which mattered as the station moved toward long-term, routine operations. The mission also reflected how Shuttle flights increasingly focused on logistics as assembly neared completion.
Space Shuttle Endeavour delivered the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02), a major physics experiment designed to study cosmic rays, along with an external logistics carrier (ELC-3). This mission highlighted how the Shuttle was used not only to build the station but also to deliver high-value science hardware. It was also the last flight of Endeavour, marking the approaching end of Shuttle-based ISS support.
Space Shuttle Atlantis launched on the last mission of the Space Shuttle program, carrying the Raffaello Multi-Purpose Logistics Module and other cargo. The flight delivered supplies for continued ISS operations as NASA transitioned to a new era of cargo and crew transportation. With STS-135, the Shuttle’s role in ISS assembly and logistics formally ended, closing the 1998–2011 chapter of Shuttle-built station growth.
