Mission planners chose Ares Vallis, a broad outflow channel region, as the Mars Pathfinder landing site because it was relatively safe for landing and offered a mix of rocks likely carried by ancient floods. This decision set the mission’s science focus on understanding past water-related processes while also testing a new landing approach.
NASA announced the rover name “Sojourner,” honoring Sojourner Truth. Publicly naming the rover helped define it as a key part of the mission and highlighted that Pathfinder would attempt the first rover operation on Mars since the Soviet-era Lunokhod rovers on the Moon.
Mars Pathfinder launched from Cape Canaveral on a Delta II rocket, carrying the Pathfinder lander and the small Sojourner rover. The mission was part of NASA’s Discovery program and aimed to demonstrate a lower-cost way to land on Mars and operate a rover.
After separating from the upper stage, Pathfinder began its interplanetary cruise to Mars. During this period, the spacecraft’s trajectory was monitored and adjusted so it would hit the right entry corridor into the Martian atmosphere.
On July 4, 1997, Mars Pathfinder reached Mars and completed its entry, descent, and landing sequence, arriving at Ares Vallis in Chryse Planitia. The spacecraft slowed using a heat shield, parachute, and rockets, then used airbags to cushion impact—NASA’s first use of this airbag technique on Mars.
The day after landing, NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin formally named the Pathfinder lander the Carl Sagan Memorial Station in honor of Carl Sagan, who had died in December 1996. The naming linked the mission’s public outreach and scientific goals to Sagan’s legacy of planetary exploration.
After touchdown, Pathfinder’s protective airbags were successfully retracted. This was a key step because it cleared the area around the lander so the rover ramps could be deployed for Sojourner to drive onto the surface safely.
On the night of July 5 (early in the second Martian day, or sol 2), Sojourner rolled down Pathfinder’s ramp and began surface operations. This marked the start of the first successful rover traverse work on Mars, demonstrating that a small, solar-powered rover could be deployed and driven after landing.
Sojourner’s primary science work included examining rocks and soil near the lander and measuring their chemical makeup with its Alpha Proton X-ray Spectrometer (APXS). These early measurements helped scientists compare different rock types at the site and strengthened the mission’s goal of linking geology to Mars’ environmental history.
Mars Pathfinder and Sojourner both outlived their planned lifetimes (about a month for the lander and about a week for the rover). Over the mission, they returned large image sets and weather and composition measurements, showing that the low-cost approach could still deliver major scientific results.
On September 27, 1997, Mars Pathfinder completed its last successful data transmission cycle back to Earth. By that point, the mission had returned about 2.3 gigabits of data, including thousands of images and multiple chemical analyses, and had demonstrated the airbag landing system and rover operations as intended.
After months of efforts to restore communications, mission managers formally ended Mars Pathfinder operations on March 10, 1998. The outcome was a proven landing-and-rover approach that influenced later Mars rover missions and expanded evidence that Mars was once more warm and wet than it is today.
