Soyuz 1 launched as the first crewed mission of the new Soyuz spacecraft. In orbit, major systems failed, and during return the parachute system malfunctioned. Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov was killed when the descent module struck the ground, forcing a major rethink of Soyuz design and testing.
After Soyuz 1, the program returned to crewed operations with Soyuz 3. The mission achieved a rendezvous (a close approach) with an uncrewed Soyuz 2 target, showing improved navigation and control. A planned docking did not occur, but the flight helped rebuild confidence in the spacecraft.
Soyuz 4 and Soyuz 5 performed the first docking of two crewed spacecraft. Because these early Soyuz vehicles had no internal tunnel between them, two cosmonauts transferred by spacewalk (EVA) from Soyuz 5 to Soyuz 4. The mission demonstrated key skills needed for later stations: docking operations and moving people between vehicles.
The Soviet Union launched Salyut 1, widely recognized as the world’s first space station. This shifted Soyuz from short test flights toward regular crew transport to long-duration orbital outposts. It also raised new safety demands, because crews now depended on Soyuz both as a ferry and an emergency return craft.
Soyuz 10 reached Salyut 1 and achieved docking, but the crew could not enter the station due to docking and/or hatch problems. The attempt showed that rendezvous and docking were possible, but also exposed how a single mechanical failure could block an entire station mission. The crew returned safely, but the station remained unoccupied.
Soyuz 11 successfully boarded Salyut 1 and set a then-record stay for a station crew. During return to Earth, the Soyuz capsule depressurized, and the crew died before landing. This remains the only case where humans are known to have died in space (above the atmosphere), and it drove major Soyuz safety changes.
Soyuz 12 marked the return to Soviet crewed flight after the Soyuz 11 tragedy. The redesigned Soyuz 7K-T reduced the crew from three to two so cosmonauts could wear pressure suits during launch and reentry. This change directly addressed the risk revealed by cabin depressurization and became part of a broader safety reset.
Soyuz 18a (also known as Soyuz 18-1) suffered a serious launch failure and did not reach orbit. The crew performed an emergency abort and the capsule made a steep, high‑G ballistic descent to a landing in mountainous terrain. The survival of both cosmonauts became a key case study for launch escape and abort procedures.
After an aborted docking attempt, Soyuz 23 returned to Earth and splashed down on (partly frozen) Lake Tengiz instead of landing on land. The capsule ended up lying on its side in the water, and difficult weather conditions delayed recovery. The incident highlighted how off-target landings could become survival and rescue problems even when the spacecraft worked normally.
Soyuz 33 approached Salyut 6 but experienced a main engine failure during rendezvous operations. The docking was canceled, and the crew returned to Earth without completing the planned station visit. The failure led to design and procedure reviews focused on propulsion reliability and safe return options after engine anomalies.
A fire broke out at the base of the Soyuz T-10-1 launch vehicle while it was still on the pad. The launch escape system pulled the crew capsule away, saving both cosmonauts only seconds before the rocket was destroyed. This event became one of the most important real-world demonstrations that the Soyuz escape tower could work in an extreme emergency.
After Salyut 7 stopped communicating and was effectively “dead” in orbit, Soyuz T-13 launched on a repair mission. The crew manually approached and docked, entered a cold station with failed electrical systems, and gradually restored power, thermal control, and life-support functions. The mission showed that Soyuz crews could perform complex in-space repair and “rescue” a major orbital asset.
Soyuz T-15 flew the first expedition to the new Mir station, then departed and traveled to Salyut 7 before returning to Mir. Visiting two stations in one mission tested planning, docking, and logistics under tight fuel and schedule limits. It also marked the program’s transition from the Salyut era to Mir-centered operations.
Soyuz TM-2 was the first crewed flight of the upgraded Soyuz‑TM spacecraft and carried a long-duration crew to Mir. With improved rendezvous and docking systems, Soyuz‑TM became the standard way to rotate crews and provide a “lifeboat” return vehicle for the station. This marked Soyuz’s shift into a more regular, service-like role supporting a permanent space station program.
Soyuz TM-13 launched with a Soviet crew plus Austrian guest cosmonaut Franz Viehböck as part of the Austromir-91 program, docking with Mir two days later. The mission unfolded during a period of rapid political change, with the Soviet Union dissolving in December 1991 while the spacecraft remained in service. It closed this era by showing Soyuz and Mir continuing operations through a historic transition, with international participation becoming a lasting part of the program’s legacy.
