Korabl-Sputnik 1 (Sputnik 4 in the West) was the first test flight of a Vostok-type spacecraft. It carried systems intended for future crewed missions, including life-support test equipment, but a guidance problem prevented a controlled deorbit, showing how risky recovery and reentry still were.
Program managers selected six cosmonauts for faster, more mission-specific training aimed at the earliest Vostok flights. This created a clear pathway from a larger candidate pool to the most likely first fliers, tightening schedules as spacecraft tests advanced.
Korabl-Sputnik 2 (Sputnik 5) carried dogs Belka and Strelka into orbit and returned them alive. The successful recovery showed that life-support and reentry systems could work together, a crucial requirement before risking a human flight.
Korabl-Sputnik 3 was another Vostok test mission, but its capsule burned up on reentry, killing the dogs on board. The failure highlighted that safe return was not yet routine and pushed designers to keep refining heat shielding, control, and recovery procedures.
After exams and training reviews, managers ranked the leading candidates for the first crewed Vostok mission: Yuri Gagarin first, followed by Gherman Titov and Grigori Nelyubov. This decision narrowed planning to specific individuals and simplified final rehearsals and mission procedures.
Korabl-Sputnik 4 (Sputnik 9) flew a one-orbit mission carrying a mannequin, dog Chernushka, and other specimens, then returned successfully. It also tested the ejection-seat concept used in early Vostok landings, where the cosmonaut separated from the capsule and parachuted down.
Korabl-Sputnik 5 (often listed as a Vostok 3KA test flight) completed another single-orbit mission and returned safely, acting as the last major dress rehearsal before a crewed launch. With recovery systems proven again, the program moved from testing to committing a person to orbit.
Vostok 1 carried Yuri Gagarin into low Earth orbit, making him the first human to orbit Earth and return alive. The success demonstrated that the Soviet approach—automated flight control, life support, and recovery—could achieve a complete human orbital mission.
Vostok 2 flew Gherman Titov for more than 25 hours, moving beyond a short demonstration flight to a longer test of human endurance in weightlessness. The mission helped Soviet engineers and doctors collect data on sleep, motion sickness, and performance during extended time in orbit.
Vostok 3 and Vostok 4 launched on back-to-back days with two cosmonauts in orbit at the same time, demonstrating coordinated operations. Although they did not dock, the missions showed improved launch accuracy, communications between spacecraft, and longer multi-day flights.
Vostok 5 launched Valery Bykovsky for nearly five days, then Vostok 6 launched Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, creating another paired mission. Together they confirmed that the Vostok system could support longer flights and multiple crewed spacecraft in orbit, while also expanding who could fly.
Vostok 6 returned safely to Earth, ending the six-mission crewed Vostok run (1961–1963). With firsts achieved—first human in orbit, longer-duration flights, paired missions, and the first woman in space—the Soviet program shifted toward new spacecraft designs (such as Voskhod) aimed at more complex goals.
