NASA planned Apollo 10 as the full lunar-landing mission rehearsal—testing flight plans, navigation, and spacecraft operations in lunar orbit without making a landing. The mission paired the Command and Service Module (CSM) with the Lunar Module (LM) to practice procedures Apollo 11 would soon need. This decision set up Apollo 10 as a critical “all-up” systems test before attempting the first landing.
Apollo 10 lifted off on a Saturn V rocket from Launch Complex 39B with Thomas Stafford, John Young, and Eugene Cernan onboard. Launching from Pad B helped NASA keep Pad A available for preparations for Apollo 11. The mission began an eight-day flight designed to prove the lunar-landing system worked as an integrated whole.
After reaching Earth orbit, the Saturn V’s third stage performed translunar injection (TLI), the burn that put Apollo 10 on a trajectory to the Moon. This step was essential to verify timing, guidance, and communications for a lunar mission using the full Apollo stack. The crew then began midcourse navigation and spacecraft checks for the days ahead.
A major engine burn placed Apollo 10 into orbit around the Moon, transitioning the mission from translunar cruise to lunar operations. Entering lunar orbit tested tracking, navigation, and the spacecraft’s ability to operate far from Earth under lunar gravity. This milestone set the stage for the LM’s independent flight and low-altitude pass over the future landing area.
The crew separated the Lunar Module (LM) from the Command Module (CM) in lunar orbit, beginning the key dress-rehearsal sequence. This step tested procedures for undocking and two-spacecraft operations around the Moon. It also positioned the mission to simulate the start of a real landing attempt.
With Stafford and Cernan in the LM, the descent engine fired in a planned sequence to lower the LM’s orbit and simulate the approach a landing mission would make. The goal was to practice the landing timeline up to the point where a real mission would commit to touchdown.
The LM flew a very low pass over Apollo 11’s planned landing region in the Sea of Tranquility, coming to about 7.8 nautical miles above the surface. During this pass, the crew practiced landmark tracking and took extensive photographs to support landing-site recognition. They also checked key systems needed for a landing, including the LM landing radar’s altitude data.
When the LM separated (“staged”) its descent stage from its ascent stage—another key landing-mission procedure—the ascent stage began an unexpected gyration. The crew regained control and continued the mission, later attributing the problem to an incorrect switch configuration linked to checklist procedures. This incident helped NASA refine procedures and reduce risk for Apollo 11.
After completing its solo objectives, the LM performed rendezvous and docked with the Command Module in lunar orbit. This tested the precision navigation and piloting needed for a crew to return from the Moon’s surface to the orbiting CSM on a landing mission. Successful docking confirmed that the two-spacecraft mission architecture could work as planned.
Stafford and Cernan moved from the LM back into the CSM with film and mission data, then sealed the hatches for the last time. Discarding the LM after completing its role mirrored how the LM would be left behind after a landing mission’s ascent stage returned the crew to lunar orbit. This step wrapped up the “dress rehearsal” phase and prepared Apollo 10 for the trip home.
Apollo 10 fired its main engine to leave lunar orbit and head back to Earth, completing the core end-to-end mission profile needed for a landing attempt. This burn and the following coast tested communications, navigation updates, and spacecraft operations during the return leg. The successful departure from lunar orbit was another key proof point for Apollo 11 readiness.
The Command Module reentered Earth’s atmosphere and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, where recovery forces retrieved the crew and spacecraft. Splashdown near the recovery ship USS Princeton concluded an eight-day mission that had tested the lunar-landing system in realistic conditions. Apollo 10’s results reduced uncertainty and helped clear the way for Apollo 11’s landing attempt in July 1969.
