NASA planned Apollo 15 as the first “J‑mission,” a longer lunar stay with more science and more mobility than earlier landings. The mission focused on the Hadley–Apennine region to sample both mare basalts (lava plains) and older highland material from the Apennine Front and nearby Hadley Rille. This set the stage for Apollo 15’s stronger emphasis on geology and on-orbit measurements.
Apollo 15 launched from Kennedy Space Center on a Saturn V rocket, beginning its journey to the Moon. The crew was David R. Scott (commander), Alfred M. Worden (command module pilot), and James B. Irwin (lunar module pilot). This launch started the most science-focused Apollo mission flown up to that time.
After sending the crew toward the Moon, Apollo 15’s Saturn V S‑IVB stage was deliberately crashed into the lunar surface. Seismometers left by earlier Apollo missions detected the impact, helping scientists learn about the Moon’s interior by tracking how vibrations traveled through it. This was an early example of using mission hardware as a planned scientific tool.
The spacecraft fired its main engine to enter orbit around the Moon. From lunar orbit, the mission could support a landing at Hadley–Apennine while also preparing for extensive photography and other observations. This orbital phase also set up the separation of the landing craft from the command ship.
The Lunar Module Falcon, carrying Scott and Irwin, landed in the Hadley Rille–Apennine region while Worden stayed in orbit in Endeavour. The landing site was chosen to reach two different kinds of terrain: young volcanic plains and older mountain materials thought to be uplifted by the Imbrium impact. This touchdown began the first human “J‑mission” field campaign on the Moon.
Soon after landing, Scott performed a “stand-up EVA,” opening the top hatch and photographing the area from the Lunar Module. The panorama helped the crew and scientists confirm landmarks and plan safe, efficient traverses. It also showed how Apollo 15’s extra time on the surface supported more deliberate geology work.
Scott and Irwin used the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) for the first time on the Moon, greatly extending how far they could travel on foot-supported EVAs. The rover’s electric drive and tools let them reach more rock units, sample more locations, and return more equipment and samples to Falcon. This step made Apollo 15 a turning point in surface mobility and field geology.
During the second EVA, the crew collected sample 15415, later nicknamed the “Genesis Rock,” an anorthosite linked to the Moon’s early crust. The find was important because it supported the goal of sampling ancient highland material in the Apennine Front region. It became one of the best-known Apollo 15 samples used in later laboratory studies of lunar history.
On the third EVA, Scott and Irwin continued rover traverses, sampling and documenting the site and completing planned surface tasks. Across three EVAs, they set up the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) and returned a large collection of rock and soil samples. This sustained pace demonstrated what longer surface stays could accomplish scientifically.
Falcon lifted off from the lunar surface to rejoin Endeavour in orbit, ending Apollo 15’s surface stay. The ascent was notable because the liftoff was televised using the rover’s camera, helping engineers and the public see a critical mission step in real time. Rendezvous and docking restored the three-person crew to one spacecraft for the return trip.
Before departing lunar orbit, the crew released the Particles and Fields Subsatellite (PFS‑1) to study the Moon’s environment. Its instruments measured charged particles and magnetic fields and helped map variations in lunar gravity. This expanded Apollo 15’s scientific output beyond the surface work at Hadley–Apennine.
On the way back to Earth, Alfred Worden conducted an EVA in deep space to retrieve exposed film cassettes from the Service Module’s scientific instrument bay. The spacewalk ensured that high-value mapping and photography data returned safely for analysis. It also demonstrated operational skills needed for complex space tasks away from Earth orbit.
Apollo 15 splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, ending a 12-day mission that combined extended lunar surface work with expanded orbital science. The crew returned a major sample set and a large volume of photographs and instrument data for laboratories and researchers. Its results helped define how later Apollo missions (16 and 17) would plan longer traverses and more targeted geology.
