NASA selected Grumman to design and build the Lunar Module (LM), the spacecraft meant to land on the Moon and return astronauts to lunar orbit. This decision started the long engineering effort that would later require several flight tests, including an uncrewed demonstration before any crew relied on the LM.
During a ground test at Cape Canaveral, a fire in the Apollo command module killed astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. NASA paused crewed Apollo missions and redesigned equipment and procedures, increasing pressure to validate key spacecraft systems safely before returning astronauts to flight.
NASA publicly laid out a 1968 flight schedule that included Apollo/Saturn 204 as the first uncrewed test of the LM in Earth orbit. This plan reflected a strategy of qualifying the command/service module and the lunar module on overlapping test flights to meet the decade’s Moon-landing goal.
Apollo 4 was the first flight of the Saturn V rocket and an uncrewed test of the Apollo command and service module on a high-speed reentry profile. The successful mission helped restart momentum after Apollo 1 and set the stage for parallel testing of the Lunar Module using the smaller Saturn IB rocket.
Apollo 5 (AS-204) lifted off from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 37B carrying Lunar Module-1 (LM-1) into low Earth orbit. It was the first spaceflight of the Lunar Module, flown without a crew to reduce risk while testing critical systems that later had to work around the Moon.
After orbital insertion, the Saturn IB’s upper stage deployed the spacecraft-lunar module adapter panels and the LM separated into its own orbit. Controllers used this phase to evaluate LM structure and basic spacecraft behavior in the space environment before the main engine tests.
A planned 39-second firing of the LM descent propulsion system (the engine intended to slow the LM toward the Moon) ended after only a few seconds. NASA attributed the cut-off to overly conservative flight-software logic, and the team shifted to an alternate test plan rather than end the mission.
Using the backup plan, Apollo 5 fired the descent engine at low thrust and then at high thrust to continue evaluating performance. These tests mattered because the LM descent engine needed to be throttleable (able to vary power) for a controlled landing profile on later crewed missions.
Apollo 5 also fired the LM ascent propulsion system, the engine designed to lift astronauts off the Moon and return to orbit. Demonstrating ascent-engine starts in space supported a core safety requirement: the LM had to be able to abort a landing attempt and still reach orbit for rendezvous.
After about 11 hours in space and seven orbits, Apollo 5 concluded its planned demonstrations of major LM functions, including propulsion and staging-related checks. The uncrewed test increased confidence that the LM design could progress toward crewed verification flights.
Apollo 7 was the first crewed Apollo mission after the Apollo 1 fire and focused on qualifying the command and service module in Earth orbit. With the LM’s uncrewed propulsion tests behind NASA, Apollo 7’s success helped set up the next step: flying a crew with a lunar module in orbit.
Apollo 9 was the first crewed flight to carry a lunar module, testing docking, crew transfer, and LM operations in Earth orbit. Together with the earlier uncrewed Apollo 5 demonstration, Apollo 9’s results completed the key LM qualification path that enabled later lunar-orbit rehearsals and the first landing attempt.
