During his exile in the Netherlands (1683–1689), John Locke completed the manuscript that became An Essay Concerning Human Understanding. The work grew out of an earlier discussion about what the human mind can know, and it aimed to map the “limits” of human knowledge rather than build a grand metaphysical system.
Locke’s Essay was published in London in late 1689, but the title page was dated 1690, a common publishing practice at the time. It presented a systematic case against “innate ideas” and argued that the mind’s contents come from experience—through sensation and reflection (awareness of our own mental operations).
A core early impact of the Essay was its clear challenge to rationalist claims that some ideas or principles are “born in” the mind. Locke argued instead that knowledge begins with experience, shaping the later debate often described as rationalism vs. empiricism in early modern epistemology.
Locke continued revising the Essay in response to readers and critics, and a substantially revised second edition appeared in 1694. This pattern—public response followed by revision—helped the book become a living reference point in debates about how humans form ideas and justify beliefs.
A third edition appeared in 1695, showing that the Essay was being widely read and discussed. By the mid-1690s, Locke’s approach to ideas, language, and knowledge had become a central reference for English-language philosophy and began spreading more broadly in Europe.
Pierre Bayle’s Historical and Critical Dictionary (first published 1697) helped circulate critical discussion of philosophy and theology across Europe. This wider “republic of letters” context mattered for Locke’s influence: it created a large audience for disputes about reason, experience, and the limits of certainty.
The fourth edition (1700) included further revisions and additions, reflecting ongoing controversies and refinements. Across the editions, Locke expanded discussion of issues that became central in later epistemology and philosophy of mind, including identity and the “association of ideas” (how ideas become linked in thought).
In 1703–1704, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz wrote the New Essays Concerning Human Understanding as a chapter-by-chapter response to Locke. Using Locke’s work as a framework, Leibniz argued that the mind has a more active internal structure than Locke’s empiricism seemed to allow, keeping the rationalist–empiricist conflict alive.
Locke died in 1704, but a fifth edition of the Essay appeared in 1706 with minor revisions and additional notes, including material connected to contemporary disputes. Its publication helped stabilize the text that later thinkers would treat as the standard Locke on knowledge and experience.
George Berkeley’s Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710) directly challenged parts of Locke’s theory of perception, especially Locke’s way of talking about material substance behind experience. Berkeley agreed that knowledge comes through experience, but argued that what we call “objects” are fundamentally ideas in minds, pushing empiricism in a new direction.
In The Spectator (a widely read London periodical beginning in 1711), Joseph Addison quoted and praised Locke’s discussion of “wit” and “judgment.” This showed that Locke’s ideas were not confined to academic philosophy: they were entering mainstream educated conversation about how the mind works.
Voltaire’s Letters on England (published in French in 1734) contrasted Locke’s empiricist psychology with what Voltaire portrayed as overly speculative philosophy. This helped make Locke a symbol of an “experimental” approach to the mind for many readers in the French Enlightenment.
David Hume’s A Treatise of Human Nature (1739–1740) aimed to apply an “experimental method” to human nature, continuing an empiricist project shaped by Locke’s focus on ideas and experience. Hume’s work became a major turning point, pressing empiricism toward deeper skepticism about causation, the self, and the limits of reason.
Étienne Bonnot de Condillac’s Essay on the Origin of Human Knowledge (1746) developed Locke’s anti-innatist approach but argued that language and “signs” are central to the growth of thought. This shifted part of the empiricism debate from sense experience alone toward how words structure and expand human understanding.
Although Leibniz completed his New Essays in 1704, it was not published until 1765, long after both Locke and Leibniz had died. Its release gave readers a detailed rationalist counterpoint to Locke’s Essay, closing the 1689–1760 phase by showing how Locke’s empiricism continued to shape—and provoke—European debates about knowledge and reality.
