Schelling’s early book Ideen zu einer Philosophie der Natur helped launch his Naturphilosophie (philosophy of nature). He argued that nature should be studied as a dynamic, self-organizing whole rather than as a mere machine of separate parts. This set the main problem that shaped his next works: how nature and mind belong to one system.
With Von der Weltseele, Schelling expanded his nature-philosophy using the idea that living nature shows coordinated, organism-like patterns. He used this to push back against approaches that treat life as only mechanical motion. The work helped him argue that nature’s productivity can be understood as continuous development, not as a collection of fixed things.
In 1798, Schelling was called to the University of Jena, placing him at a major center of German intellectual life. The move mattered because it brought his nature-philosophy into direct contact with debates around Kant, Fichte, and early Romanticism. His Jena years helped him develop a more ambitious “system” connecting nature, knowledge, and art.
In 1799, Schelling published Erster Entwurf eines Systems der Naturphilosophie, aiming for a more structured account of nature as a developing process. Rather than starting from the human “I” alone, he treated nature as having its own intelligible order and stages. This strengthened his claim that a complete idealism must also explain the reality of nature.
Schelling’s System des transzendentalen Idealismus (1800) tried to show how knowledge, self-consciousness, and nature fit together within one philosophical account. A key idea is that nature and mind are not two unrelated worlds; they are connected in a single process that becomes visible in human experience. The work also highlights art as a special “bridge” between nature and freedom.
In 1801, Schelling published Darstellung meines Systems der Philosophie, often linked with his “identity philosophy.” He argued that the deepest principle of philosophy must treat subject and object—mind and world—as united in the Absolute, not as permanently opposed. This marked a shift from explaining nature mainly as development to explaining both nature and spirit through an underlying identity.
Schelling’s 1802 dialogue Bruno used Renaissance themes and Spinoza-like questions to explore how the divine and the natural relate within one reality. The dialogue format let him test how “identity” could be understood without reducing everything to either pure spirit or mere matter. It reinforced his effort to give idealism a robust account of nature as genuinely real.
Around 1802–1803, Schelling delivered influential lectures later known as Philosophie der Kunst (Philosophy of Art). In these lectures, art becomes a central place where the unity of nature and spirit can be “shown,” not just argued for. This strengthened the Romantic-era idea that aesthetic experience can reveal philosophical truth about reality.
In Philosophie und Religion (1804), Schelling addressed how philosophical thinking relates to religious life and belief. The work reflects his growing interest in themes that do not fit neatly into earlier “system” language, such as the role of revelation and the limits of purely conceptual explanation. This helped prepare the later turn toward freedom, evil, and historical development.
In 1806, Schelling received the title “von” (ennoblement) and began a long Munich period that reshaped his work. He also held a senior cultural-administrative role as general secretary of the Academy of Plastic Arts. The change of setting mattered: his thinking moved away from the early Jena debates and toward a reworking of idealism under new pressures and criticisms.
In 1807, Schelling delivered a public address titled Über das Verhältnis der bildenden Künste zu der Natur (On the Relation of the Visual Arts to Nature). He connected artistic form-making to nature’s own productivity, strengthening his long-running claim that nature is not dead material but an active power. The event shows how his idealism kept an aesthetic route into metaphysics, even as his interests shifted.
In 1809, Schelling published Philosophische Untersuchungen über das Wesen der menschlichen Freiheit (often called the Freiheitsschrift). He made freedom central and argued that understanding evil is part of understanding real human agency, not a side issue. This was a turning point from earlier system-building toward a darker metaphysics that emphasizes decision, conflict, and the “ground” of existence.
In the autumn of 1810, Schelling gave a set of private lectures in Stuttgart to a small audience of officials. These lectures are often treated as a compact overview of his system at a moment of transition—from the earlier philosophy of nature and identity toward later concerns with spirit, history, and religion. They show him trying to restate his whole project in a more unified, teachable form.
Beginning in 1811, Schelling worked on Die Weltalter (The Ages of the World), a long, unfinished project with multiple drafts. He tried to describe reality as a staged process (an “ages” structure) that includes nature, time, and the emergence of consciousness. The project signals his move toward a later idealism that relies more on historical development and less on a single tidy system.
In 1841, Schelling began his last major public stage in Berlin, where he lectured in competition with established post-Hegelian debates. His late teaching focused strongly on mythology and revelation, aiming to explain how human cultures and religions belong to philosophy’s account of reality. This Berlin period represents the mature endpoint of his shift from early nature-philosophy to a later idealism centered on history, religion, and freedom.
Schelling died on August 20, 1854, in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland. His long career left a clear arc: from early Naturphilosophie (nature as living process), through identity philosophy (mind and world grounded in one Absolute), to later work centered on freedom, evil, and historical-religious development. His writings and lectures became lasting reference points for later debates about nature, consciousness, and the structure of reality.
