Fichte begins Jena lectures on Wissenschaftslehre
Labels: Johann Gottlieb, University of, WissenschaftslehreIn 1794 Johann Gottlieb Fichte took up a professorship at the University of Jena and began lecturing on what he called the Wissenschaftslehre (“Doctrine of Scientific Knowledge”). This project aimed to rebuild philosophy as a systematic science by starting from the activity of the self (the “I”), rather than from things presumed to exist independently of consciousness. These lectures set the stage for Fichte’s early, strongly subject-centered idealism.
