On mainland Greece, Mycenaean elites developed palace administrations that resembled (and interacted with) Minoan systems. These centers helped coordinate agricultural production, manage herds, and store commodities used for rations and feasts. Over time, mainland political power grew, setting the stage for a shift in control over Cretan palaces.
By the mid-15th century BCE, mainland Greek (Mycenaean) influence or control is visible on Crete, including at Knossos. One sign of this transition is the use of Linear B (used to write Mycenaean Greek) in palace records, replacing earlier Minoan scripts. Along with metals and luxury items, evidence suggests shipments could include olive oil and other perishables, showing that foods and food containers were part of high-value trade. This wider network linked Crete and mainland Greece to suppliers and consumers far beyond the Aegean.
Stirrup jars became common containers for shipping valuable liquids, especially olive oil, across the Aegean and beyond. Their widespread distribution shows the scale of trade and how food products could travel far from where they were produced. Standard containers also made it easier for palaces and merchants to store, count, and export surplus goods.
At Pylos, Linear B tablets record preparations for large events that combined politics, religion, and communal eating. Some lists include measured supplies such as flour, olives, and wine, indicating planned provisioning rather than improvised meals. These records highlight how palaces used stored food to stage feasts that reinforced authority and social order.
Between roughly 1200 and 1100 BCE, many Mycenaean palace centers were destroyed or abandoned in a wider regional breakdown often called the Late Bronze Age collapse. As palaces fell, Linear B writing disappeared because it was tied to palace bureaucracy. The closing outcome for this timeline is that the best textual window into Minoan-Mycenaean food economies ended, and diets became harder to reconstruct until later Greek periods.
Around 1180 BCE, the Palace of Nestor at Pylos was destroyed by fire, accidentally preserving many Linear B tablets. The end of the palace meant the end of centralized storage, ration distribution, and record-keeping for that region.
