Near Eastern fermentation traditions persist into classical-era descriptions
Labels: Greek authors, Barley beerBy around 500 BCE, Near Eastern empires had changed, but fermented beverages remained visible enough to be noted in later written traditions. Greek authors (writing in the 5th century BCE) mention barley-based alcoholic drinks in the region, showing that cereal fermentation was still widely understood outside Mesopotamia itself. This provides a closing “legacy” point: by the end of the period, beer and other fermented drinks were established, durable parts of Near Eastern food culture.
