In 1535, Olinda was founded in Pernambuco and soon became closely tied to the region’s growing sugar economy. Over time, the city and its port relationship with Recife helped connect plantation sugar to Atlantic shipping networks. This urban base supported the spread of plantation-style sugar cultivation in Pernambuco.
In 1549, Portugal created a central colonial government in Brazil and sent Tomé de Sousa as the first governor-general. He founded Salvador (in today’s Bahia) as a fortified capital and administrative hub. This strengthened Portuguese control over the northeast coast and helped support plantation expansion, including sugar production for export.
During the 1500s, sugar production in Pernambuco and Bahia increasingly organized around the engenho: a combined plantation estate and sugar mill. These estates required large landholdings, machinery, and a sizable labor force, helping make plantation agriculture central to regional wealth. The system also tied local foodways to plantation life through fields, livestock, and provisioning farms that fed mill communities.
In 1563, land connected to the Sant’Ana sugar mill area near Ilhéus (Bahia) was donated to the Jesuits, who established estates there. Religious orders became important landholders and economic actors in parts of colonial Brazil, including in plantation zones. Their properties could link sugar production with mission settlements and local food supply systems.
In May 1624, Dutch West India Company forces captured Salvador, aiming to control a major port and influence regional sugar production and trade. The occupation was short-lived but showed how valuable Brazil’s sugar economy had become in European power struggles. The attack also disrupted local governance and the movement of goods from plantations to export markets.
From April to May 1625, a large Spanish–Portuguese expedition retook Salvador from the Dutch. Restoring control over Salvador helped protect Bahia’s plantation hinterlands and the shipping routes that carried sugar and other commodities. The episode also reinforced how plantation economies could drive military planning across the Atlantic.
In early 1630, Dutch forces captured Recife and nearby Olinda in Pernambuco, the richest sugar-producing region of the period. Control of these coastal centers gave the Dutch leverage over sugar exports and plantation credit (loans and supplies used to keep mills operating). This occupation deepened the connection between warfare, finance, and plantation production.
In 1645, luso-Brazilian planters and allies launched the Insurrection of Pernambuco against Dutch rule. Debt pressures and conflict over control of plantations and trade were among the key drivers. The fighting increasingly weakened Dutch power in plantation zones and disrupted sugar production and export flows.
On 28 January 1654, Portuguese and local forces entered Recife after a prolonged siege, forcing the Dutch West India Company out of Brazil. This ended Dutch political control over Pernambuco’s sugar region and returned plantations to Portuguese colonial authority. Even after the victory, rebuilding mills and restoring credit networks remained major challenges for plantation owners.
In 1661, Portugal and the Dutch Republic signed the Treaty of The Hague, in which the Dutch recognized Portuguese sovereignty over Dutch Brazil (New Holland) in exchange for an indemnity. The agreement reduced the risk of renewed Dutch conquest in the northeast. It also helped stabilize the political setting in which Pernambuco and Bahia’s plantation economies operated.
From the early 1600s, the Quilombo of Palmares formed in the interior near Pernambuco/Alagoas as a large community of escaped enslaved people and allies. Its long survival highlights how plantation slavery produced both constant labor flight and organized resistance. Palmares was defeated militarily in 1694, marking a major turning point in regional maroon (runaway) autonomy.
In 1759, the Portuguese Crown expelled the Jesuits from its empire and confiscated their properties, including estates in Brazil. Selling or reallocating these lands could change local control over plantations, labor, and food production for mill communities. In the sugar zones of the northeast, the policy reinforced Crown authority over major landholders.
On 13 August 1759, the Marquis of Pombal created the Companhia Geral de Pernambuco e Paraíba to promote and control trade in the sugar-producing northeast. By concentrating shipping and commerce in a privileged company, the Crown tried to raise revenue and tighten oversight of plantation exports and imported supplies. These reforms reshaped who profited from sugar and how plantation goods moved through Atlantic markets.
In 1798, the Revolt of the Tailors (Bahian Conspiracy) emerged in Salvador with strong participation from artisans, soldiers, and Black residents, including enslaved and free people. Demands included political change and, for many participants, the end of slavery—directly challenging plantation society. The harsh repression that followed showed how fragile colonial order had become in a region deeply shaped by sugar, slavery, and Atlantic trade.
By 1800, Pernambuco and Bahia still relied heavily on sugar plantations and enslaved labor, even as global competition and political pressures strained the system. Plantation landscapes continued to shape local diets through staples produced for mill settlements and through imported goods bought with sugar revenue. The era closed with a plantation economy that remained powerful but increasingly contested and vulnerable to change.
